The underdrive pullies are a way of getting much better engine acceleration and throttle response plus a bit more grunt by substituting your main pulley that is attached to your harmonic balancer that drives your serpentine belt. for a smaller pulley. The engine doesn't work as hard with the smaller pulley as it once did with the larger stock one.
An easy way to think about it is. Your mountain bike has 18 gears with 6 at the back and 3 sprockets at the front. The gears at the back are the air con, power steering, water pump, alternator etc and when you use the biggest front sprocket, its harder to push these items than the smallest front sprocket. Thats the easiest way of explaining it. Well worth the cash too if you fit them. |

i have the ford racing 3 pulley version, the main pulley, water pump and alternator, haven't noticed any issues with the power steering but lately the car has only been making short trips down to the shops, 50/60km zone, with my missus driving she doesn't get the revs up to charge the battery and the volt meter doesn'y get past the first line about 11v, she's has had to get a jump start twice, it's fine when I take it to work though, cos the revs get up into the charge zone for the alternator not quite 14v on the gauge, so just something to think about if you don't get much highway driving, I now have to put it on the charger if I don't use it, Otherwise they are worth it.

so would it be worth getting just the street kit - just the crank pulley?

If you gonna do it get the lot, I reckon the belt tension would be questionable with just a crank pulley as it is smaller, it may be fine I don't know, but by putting the larger alternator and water pump pulleys on it negates that, up to you I suppose, I just couldn't see the point of doing half the job.
