Guys just yesterday my NL 5.0 started doing this to me. I thought it must have been the fuel filter as it was getting spark and the times when she idled she idled very well. What happens is I get any load on the engine and she misfires a bit and the revs just die, sometimes it will begin to move but with very little power.
Any ideas what to check next, I think I might go through and have a look at the plugs as I think they might be a little old anyway. UPDATE 17/02/11: Fuel filter replaced no change, run a bottle of octane booster and injector cleaner through it and no change. Going to look at the MAF and give it a clean then check fuel pressure / flow. Last edited by WindeX on Thu Feb 17, 2011 11:29 am, edited 1 time in total. |

check to make sure fuel is flowing properly.
when you throttle the engine more air goes in but if no more fuel goes in the mixture will be wrong and it with splutter and stall. mine did it to me a while ago i changed the fuel filter and put some injector cleaner in and let it idle for about 20mins and it fixed itself 5l should be about the same i would think |

Alright, for $5 bucks I'll give some injector cleaner a shot.

fixes everything, my grandad swears by it. |

Update, the car can now drive around but gets lots of pops when you drop the pedal to quick and loads of hesitation, kinda like the engine is flooding. If I ease it on slow it will move all the way up to redline.

What could make it flood though, would a waaaay off TPS do it? Or could it be something else on the electrical side?

Popping through the airbox is a LEAN condition. You did change the fuel filter, right? Do a search here on how to clean the MAF hot wires.
Fuel pump OK, no leaking fuel lines/connectors? Get the fuel pressure AND flow (very important) checked with the correct gauge. It definitely sounds like she's running lean under load. Mike

Mike Thanks Mike, I will do some searching, I replaced the fuel filter but have not checked the flow or the pressure. No leaks that I can find. |

The MAF is now cleaned with some MAF cleaner, didnt change a thing though. I am now thinking its the fuel pump as it seems to be making some odd noises when I turn on the ignition to the ON position. I will check the fuel pressure(might have to go buy me one of those gauges). Is there anything else that you guys can think of?

Did you disassemble the MAF module from the housing and clean the wires? Be careful, they are very delicate. Is the timing set correctly?
Get the fuel pressure check done professionally. A gauge won't check FLOW, only pressure. Mike

Well it looks like my dizzy cap and rotor are due for a replacement. Do I need to mess around with TDC and such if I am just doing the cap and rotor?

Well I replaced the dizzy cap and rotor(ahhhh so cheap to do on a Ford). The old ones were a little nasty looking. I also checked the resistance on the leads and they came up alright, next have to have a look at the plugs. I am almost sure that its the fuel pump now as I can hear a grinding sound when I turn the ignition to the ON position, seems like a good $60 bucks or so to spend replacing it anyway.

Hey, for what it's worth reading your fault, if you have already replaced your fuel filter then I would suspect the fuel pump ( it's been known to happen ) and the TFI on the distributor. Other than those two items I would ensure the leads are in good nick and not breaking down under load or arcing to ground. I know that on my XF some years ago, I waited till it was getting dark and started the engine, pulled the bonnet down over me a bit to cut out the incoming daylight and revved the engine. I was able to see arcing from one of the leads to the rocker cover in the near darkness, which solved my rough running motor issue.

Well it did turn out to be the fuel pump! It has been replaced and she is now running fine, thanks to all who gave some tips to try and solve the problem.
