acetone will wash that straight out then a petrol bath then a hot wash bingo like new again.

Anyway, my half a clue makes me question your emulsification theory. I do think you're on the right track though.
Here is my theory. The stuff in the engine is plastic.
More specifically some sort of a polymer. Thermoplastic maybe, something like a PET. Now, i know you need ethylene glycol and some acid to make it, and we already have one of those. With heat, and water and electrolysis of god knows what in the engine, is it possible that the acid showed up too? I recall, that in engines, the oil can react with combustion byproducts to form some sort of an acid. What do you think?


Well during combustion of octane...you would get water, CO2, nitrogen and also carbon monoxide...there are some other things in there but the only acid i can see forming is either an acid with a -COOH and maybe NH3/NH4 which can also act as an acid...but they do take a lot of energy to form so maybe it could have formed during the combustion...

Ah wells...lets just hope acetone or something basic might take it off.

Well I think we could all agree that the engine was the catalyst and no acid made that gunk.

Wouldnt only CO be produced then from CO2 later? Particularly if you had a catalytic converter?

So try a surfactant (hehe, I like big words) aka detergent, if it comes off, then I guess I was right.

If im wrong, the detergent will do nothing and blackjack_original will be right, if thats the case and it is a thermoplastic formed it should melt right off once it cops a hot enough temp.

Or it could be some other horrible mutation of chemistry!

nah, its just there way of saying the timing covers f**k, and the motor needs to be rebuilt. Dunno where all the acid theory came from...

i was thinking, if it is some sort of plastic, woudnt it have gone rock hard when it cooled?

How did it go ef302? did you manage to remove the gunk or did you buy a new motor?

If it was thermosetting plastic it would form a hard substance, but you cant melt thermosetting plastic then let it form again, it sort of chars. Like the stuff bins are made out of.

Thermo plastics are like the stuff ice cream containers are made out of, you can melt them and then reform them again.

For a plastic to be formed in the conditions that stuff formed in it would have to be a mutation of chemistry in my reckoning!

lol, anyone need some questions on theoretical physics answered?

timing cover failure is common,i changed mine last year,found a aftermarket one for under $400,cast very well and thick.i used extra earth straps on motor,and one on the pump bolts. cant help with clean up, could try steam cleaner ----shifts almost everything? :?: :?: :?:
