I have a standard 5.0L NCII Fairlane Ghia (well.... it has rims) which was a hand-me-down from my dad (He bought a new XR6).
I'm more interested in go before show, however I know it will never be a real performance car. I just want some ideas of some cheap easy mods, for just a little extra punch. My whole family are rev-heads and as a result I am semi-mechanically minded and can do a fair bit my-self (servicing, tinkering etc..) I'm thinking air-flow metre, XR8 chip and tune or something along these lines (nothing to serious; at the end of the day the car is nearly 20 years old and never going to be worth that much.) I bought a cheap oxygen sensor performance chip of ebay (Punk performance) for $20.00. It's supposed to trick the ECU into thinking more air is being inducted, in-turn forcing more fuel in, which then in-turn actually forces more air in. I'm a bit suss on it now seeing it's build quality and am unsure whether to fit it or not. Any ideas, critisisms or help would be great. |

The chip is a waste of money. It will just make it over fuel. It wont take long for the computer to realise, then it will just correct it anyway. Throw the chip in the bin.
Just do the usual mods. Nothing is cheap on the v8s, you are better off with an I6 if you want to go quick. A full exhaust (Extractors, cats and pipes), GT40P heads, Explorer Manifold (including throttle body), cam and a bigger MAF and a tune will wake it up, will be a nice cruiser then. |

Whats a 16?
Thanx 4 the suggestions Slo247. However I really don't wanna throw alot of coin at this car. Just wanna spike it up for a bit to get a couple good burn-out sessions out of it. Even if I end up killing it. I'm considering buying a 2nd hand XR6T, so that: I would be willing to do proper mods to. |

G'day Benny,
Good choice of car mate but I'm a little bias! Parts are cheap and plentiful and the sleepy 5.0L is a good start for a progressive buildup if you don't have thousands of dollars to throw at it. Have a read of my build thread mate, mine started out grandpa spec, but has a nice amount of poke to it now, never gunna set the world on fire on the drag strip, but put's a smile on my face Good luck with the build mate, keep us posted. Cheers, Mick

If there is one thing I, and I'm sure many others have learned.... there is no such thing as "cheap easy mods"
Good, well priced mods however include underdrive pulleys, Explorer intake conversion, AU MAF, thermo fan conversion. After that = $$. But the journey sure is fun, the highest recommendation i would suggest, is doing a manual conversion. Check out my build thread. |

Loud exhausts are great......I agree! This thing better be Cardinal Red considering the attention he is getting from the LWB cardinal brigade

Sorry to tell you NCIILANE but shes not red but Blue/Purple. I don't know the name of it yet and it's in the shop getting tranny leak fixed so can't check right now. It looks good but scratches so easy.
Dad already put a semi-sports exhaust on it and it does have quite a nice note but yeah, I agree: Sound is a brilliant illusion. Used to drive an old Mitsubishi colt with a Milo-tin exhaust and it seemed really quick (I'm sure it wasn't of course). The manual idea seems good to. When I hold it 2nd and plant it, it's so responsive. Wheras if I'm in D (at 60km/h) and plant it, it takes ages to drop from 4th to 2nd. You know...... Stomp........................................Think about it.........................Hrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I'm a Ford mod newbie and haven't taken any pics yet but soon you'll get to witness the fitness. Haha. (Don't get ya hopes up though, she's a bit rough) Last edited by BennyLenny on Tue Mar 29, 2011 1:27 am, edited 1 time in total. |

Throw some 3.9 diff gears in it it. that will give it some more poke. Dump the diff at the rear wheels, you done need the full 27 feet of exhaust the land barge has.
