Gday fellas heres my question. I will be buying an EF or EL wagon to use as the family car. What do most people think would be better? A I6 with around 160000ks or a 5L V8 with around 200000ks, remembering that it will be used for family driving. No mods will be done. I already own a 5L (my EB) and Im very happy with it, but not sure how good the 6 is. What do u think will last me the longest and which might give me more probs! Any advice is appreciated.

Do you like changing head gaskets and corroding heads?
If the answer is yes - buy the 6 nuf said

I've owned and driven alot of 4L Falcons, and i've also spent stupid amounts of money and time moding them
A v8 conversion has just recently been done on my EB Fairmont.. and phwoar, I dont think I could drive a 6 ever again. Stock 6's are very lifeless and need to do alot of work to keep up with the 8's.

So you've seen the light Waggin?
Tis a good feeling isn't it? When she hits around 2800 rpm she just sings doesn't she... you get a great silly smile on your face as you feel the surge and hear the engine note...

Yeah, you definitely get pushed back in your seat in the higher revs, gotta love them

As a family car, I would of thought the i6 would be better, with better economy. The power for an EF/EL i6 is only 8kw less than the 8 iron. And the i6's make more torque down low I believe.
BUT the exhaust note of the 8 wins hands down.

BUT the exhaust note of the 8 wins hands down. Actually the V8 makes noticeable torque at idle compared to the I6, anyone that had to work on them would notice how a V8 will drive straight over a two post hoist hump or drive straight onto a high 4 post hoist at idle, this "never" happened on a stock idle I6 (actually required a fair bit of throttle with most I6), sometimes when day dreaming (all the time) that was how I picked I was just about to work on a V8 E series. I6 is cheaper to get performance mods done to, I6 normally performs better when flogging it, but the V8 is far more reliable, I have never had to replace a genuine blown Windsor head gasket, I think "MrLandau" was being nice with his statement, far more things go wrong than that with the I6, just the head related problems are normally the more expensive and time consuming ones. If you are a carefully driver, the fuel consumption will be a little higher, but in the long run more rewarding sound, torque and reliability will win you over.

Thanks guys, I love my 5L EB, the power , the sound!, but when I buy the wagon its going to be just for the family, no mods will be done (my EB is my toy!!) It seems that the V8 will be a more reliable option, even with 200000ks on it. There are 2 v8 wagons for sale just near me, 1 el and 1 ef, and plenty of 6's for sale aswell! The el has 180000ks for $8990 and the ef is a fairmont with 200000ks for $7990, both V8's. The 6's with about 160000-180000ks are going for around $6500 upwards. What do u think of those prices? I appreciate your advice

Id go the 8, not due to the reliability of the 6 tho, but for the fact it drives nicer, easier and you just always feel like theres alot of torque behind you, no matter what the hell your doing.
I never had any probs with my i6 and head gaskets - maybe i was lucky. Only thing ive had go is a heater tap in both of my cars. Cheers -

I've had my '98 EL since new, and have flogged it HARD daily. Biggest mechanical problem I've ever had was a dead spark plug lead. (well I've have a seised brake caliper, but that's not engine related). Maybe it's because I've got the EL Hybrid 6, but definately no head problems. 125,000KM and counting.
Would I want a vee eight, yes, but after I've tweaked this six to within an inch of it's life.

Having a mechanical workshop and wrecking yard - I can tell you I do a s**t of I6 E series heads/headgaskets but have never had to do a V8 one. The AU I6's are a little better but still not without their problems.
