Have just recently picked up an EL Ghia 5.0L (Auto 3:45 LSD diff) for the miss's and it revs at about 2200prm's at a 100k's? just wondering if this is normal for the V8's as my 6cyl auto does about 1800rpm's at 100k's..

Not sure yet, haven't had a chance to check it out, it's an EL Fairmont wagon, I also run a 3:45 in my manual XR6 (sedan) and it is 1900rpm @ 100k's.

I drove the V8 again tonight ( don't get to drive it much as its the miss's car) and now its at 1900rpm @ 100k's ?! i'm thinking the auto maybe playing up?

its strange tho because it stayed at 2200 for about 20'ks down the road it should have been enough time for it to lock in.

Dumb question, but you never know... Was the Econ switch on or off? And are you sure it was in the same position the 2nd time you drove it?

may have been in 3 instead of D. I've done it a few times.

Also i live right next to the highway, sometimes i just start the car & take off (no warm up), anyhow can take a little while for the auto to fully warm up & drop into final gear with OD.

I've noticed this a few times now. Nothing wrong with auto as mine is reco'ed & does it here n there. i just take my foot off the accelerator & let the revs/KM's drop a little & accelerate again. This usually fixes it.

Also my v8 fairlane AU has 3.23 diff & sits at 2000rpm when doing 100km p/h.

my now somewhat deceased I6 fairlane AU which has 3.45 final drive would sit at around 2150rpm when doing 100km p/h.

Also have a I6 EF falcon with 3.08 (i think from memory) & that does around 1800rpm @ 100km p/h. The diff could also be a high 2.something (2.93 - cant remember exactly as ive just woke up)

The TC won't stay engaged unless you have some throttle on - coasting with foot off accelerator it'll be unlocked. In the EF/EL's, as with 'D', if you have '3' selected and are in third gear, the TC will lock also.

Hey guys i have an EL Xr6 factory manual with its standard xr6 diff and it runs at about 2200rpm doing 100k's. From the above post, it doesn't seem like mine is right. I have a 2.5 inch full sports exhaust with 2 mufflers too and it's still hell annoying doing 100 along the highway because of all the noise. Any suggestions on how to get it to rev lower at that speed or is it normal?

Yours is normal.

It is a mechanical calculation based on the 5th gear, diff ratio and tyre diameter. No matter what you do to the engine performance wise it won't alter the crank revolution speed at a given road speed.

The T5 in an EL has a 5th gear ratio of 0.72 and combined with a diff ratio of 3.45 and using 205/65/15 tyres your engine rpm should be 2035@100kph and 2239@110kph.

The only way to lower the engine speed is to alter the diff ratio, which will then mean you will have slower acceleration.

Cheers
BenJ

I think the OP had a issue with the tps which could cause something like this?

I had a auto tps in one of my 5.0L's... wouldn't shift up a gear until i was high in the revs..
