Hi all,
ive got a little hot 302w Xf ute with a C10 tranny that dont have many K's (approx 3000ks) on since they were rebuilt. problem is that a vibration has originated & i just wanted to get ideas of what it could be before i pull tranny out. when i start her in park & hold revs at 1300-1600rpm shes got a bad vibration that shakes my dash & steering wheel to the extent that it feels like someones jumping in my tray, but goes out after i rev it more. funny thing is that i also get the same vibration at 2700rpm in 3rd gear only & gets worse as i rev harder. feels like a major flat spot in front tyre. i had a re-programme kit put in tranny when i built the engine then she busted the old stally so i had pro converters build me another stally about 2000ks ago. is there anything in a stally that could be causing this vibration at these different times? thx Bruizer |

Harmonic Balancer?
I had something similar happen to mine, shook the hell out my car at lower revs than smoothed out at higher revs. |

Has it got the correct/same flexplate on it from before the rebuild when it was, presumably running smooth?

yes, it has the same harmonic balancer since the rebuild,
ive had a look at the balancer & it looks fine, doesnt look like its loosing its bond but i guess its only got to be out of plumb by a few thou at revs to vibrate. but it still vibrates in park at 1600rpm also (weird), wouldnt the vibration be there constantly thru all gears if h/balancer has taken a dump? no vibration thru to 6000rpm in 1st & 2nd gears. thx for your input |

What about the flexplate?

the flexplate was replaced when everything else was rebuilt & from memory weighed the same as my harmonic balancer or close to!
flexplate was cheap i guess by the sounds of it XR9UTE, your leaning towards the flexplate being twisted or something? cheers |

No I'm thinking it's got the wrong imbalance flexplate and, close to is not good enough. This happens so much it's not funny. Is yours a 50oz('82-up) or 28oz(Pre-82 engine)?

You can't use a 28oz set on a 50oz crank. Has the block got a 1 piece rear main?

{USERNAME} wrote: it has a 2 piece (dog turd) rear main It's sounding like an early 28oz but check the casting number on the block. There were some early 80's 2 piece rear 50oz engines. Also check you were actually given 28oz parts? |

hey XR9UTE,
you & a few others on here are a wealth of knowledge mate, thanks for your input! think i'll pull tranny out & just replace the h/balancer & flexplate & hopefully fix the problem so i can put her down the 1/4 (slamfest) next month. cheers |

No wuckers dude!
Here's some pics of 50 vs 28oz flexpaltes so you can see the 50 is(obviously) almost double the size counterweight.... |

Hi. Had vib like that. Why not do the balancer first, easy to do and will eliminate that side of things.
Changed mine from crap to very smooth. Just think how old the balancer is anyway. Cheers and good luck. oh and the dash vib, same as harmonic balancer |
