Hi,
I recently bought a 93 Fairlane Ghia V8 NC2 model. Has 138,000km and in mint condition. I was considering a VP Calais V8, VP SS, VQ Statesman V8, EB-ED XR8, EB-ED Fairmont Ghia V8. But all of the above cars hovered around the $5000-6000 mark with decent low km but the fairlane ghia V8 is considerably cheaper.. they are essentially all the same car, similar power, similar equipment levels, when they were new they were all around the same price as well.

I think the fairlanes have always been seen as more of a 'grandpa' car - maybe they are less in demand than Calais, Statesmans, Fairmonts - not to mention the fairlanes are LOOONG and relatively heavy (I think). The 6's are sluggish to say the least.

Is that a challenge

Simple really. Holden's are more popular than Ford's. Biased opinion I know, but the fairlane is the better buy in the same class as the statesman. Especially the paint!! Just have a look at the same model statesmans on the road now. Paint is real dull, I see many with plastic inserts coming off.

I will post some pics tomorrow.. its everglade in colour..
Mine is the 5 litre and I dont think it feels compromised in performance.. Dont they weigh about the same as the Fairmont ghia V8?

Nothing wrong with the fairlanes. But one has to remember that the fairlane and it's comrades are essentially a touring leisure type of car, not really built for speed or preformance,
built to run "the upper class" type of people around. and also to become pimp mobiles aswell lol

ewww the VQ statos are just a VN with a buble glass top, plastics and s**t every where, the only thing they got goin for them is that the 5L does perform a little better stock due to there L34 style heads. but what can ya do?
The Fairlanes still look nicer imo, almost bought one myself before i bought a EBghia 5L, but the extra wieght factor was a problem for me.

Must admit that when I first bought mine, it was grandpa spec and drove light a boat on the raod, but 18 months of modifications and tweaking and it would rival any falcon or monty in it's class for performance. Sure, it's a little heavier, but my current focus is on the engine and drivetrain, so things should be improving in this area pretty soon as well

I had a EL XR8 pull up next to me at the lights the other day & I thought WTFN give him a go & it was door handle-dor handle upto the next lights & no we didnt go past the speed limit of 80kmso I would say with the extra weight on straights doesnt matter but for parking the Lane will not fit into any parking space at my work but as its being mentioned before the Lane is a cruising car where as the Mont is luxury & performance.

You won't find L34 heads on any factory efi Holden... The L34 is the old LH Torana cylinder head.

The VN's had the best late model 308 heads and shorter intake runners which is why it performed better stock.....that and the weight reduction over falcons.

IIRC, the V8's in the e-series had only about 10 more kw than the 6's... my NL I6 smashes V8 holdens of the line, and up to 140kph before they start catching up ....
remember in the EF XR6 was quicker than the EF XR8 in 0-100 but don't get me wrong, i'd love to put a nice worked V8 in my NL,
