OK i have done a lil bit of research but thought i would ask here before going out and buying set of heads
I have an EF II XR8 that i am putting a 347 kit through What i am trying to figure out is how good are the GT40P heads and how far can they be ported (HP potential?) Where do you get the AFR heads from that i see couple other members on here have and how good are they? I'm from the old school where i know a fair bit about clevo's but this SB motor is giving me some serious headaches trying to figure out what's what lol I am pretty sure i will be using the Edelbrock Performer II intake manifold as i plan to max the RPM out at between 6500-7000rpm Once i get this question sorted out i'm ready to start buying all gear needed so any help appreciated

Ported GT40Ps can flow up to 500HP.
With those max rpms I would suggest something better than GT40Ps, they may be able to cope, I'm not 100% on that. AFR 185 heads cost over $2200. A very good head. Alloy. Not sure where to get them from though. Most likely overseas or a few performance shops in Australia. Cheers |

looking at VPW i found these heads
Single Perf. RPM SBF Head 2.02 Bare * Designed for non-emissions 289, 302, and 351-Windsor Ford engines * Maximum performance in the 1500-6500 rpm range for high performance street * 1.90†intake valves are for use with stock pistons * High-flow 2.02†intake valves are for use with pistons notched for valve clearance Only thing is will these work on our cars and be legal? OK just found australian distributor for AFR heads AFR1388 185cc CNC-ported complete heads with 58cc chambers 3/8" stud $2560 pair AFR1492 185cc CNC-ported complete heads with 58cc chambers pedestal rocker $2697 pair So i have decided it's one of these three heads and not a set of GT40P's Anyone know which heads would be better?

I'd say you cant go past the AFRs. Not sure which one out of the studs or pedestals because frankly I dont know the difference.

Try these links. AFR's are the ducks guts for those that can afford them.
http://www.allfordmustangs.com/Detailed/630.shtml http://www.airflowresearch.com/articles.php (go down the bottom & read the Ultimate Guide to 5.0 Cylinder Heads, paying particular attention to group 2 as the test motor was closest to a 347 at 331ci) http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles/11 ... e_buildup/ (165's on a 302, but 185's or even 205's on a 347 would be a comparable step up)

If you are planning to spin this beast to 7000rpm, then this may be of interest to you.

Umm... More expensive & made for the Clevo. The possible (but unknown) improvement over AFR 185's or 205's just can't justify the many extra $ needed for custom bits to use a Clevo style head on a 347w in an E series. Primarily extractors & pistons, but off-the-shelf Boss 302 manifolds are for carby setups, requiring work to get injectors to fit & those CHI heads are about $1000 more expensive than the 185 AFR's. Just not enough power can possibly be gained to justify the extra expense, even on a 7000rpm engine.

You can't go wrong with AFR 185's but also look at Dart Pro-1's, Pro-Topline 180's or 200's, Edelbrock Vic jnr and the new TFS street heat CNC ported head or the TFS high port(not the R-series). The 185 CHI's would be excellent but as Sam says too much work involved.

If your interested in the AFR185's, give Jamie's build up a read on FF, he put them on a TE50 stroker with a comp cams cam, all the other good bits with msd ignition, custom exhaust and an edit and achieved 298rwkw i with hopefully a little bit left in it.
55 pages worth of reading but its definately a good read edit: forgot the link http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=32600 |

AFR185's are a pretty safe choice for a 347 at that rpm range with the RPMII manifold.
They are available with a 58cc or 64cc chamber, what you want depends on the compression you are after, pistons you are using, deck height so on... Studs are a better rocker setup (less flex), than pedastal. You will need to buy new rockers, pushrods, and guide plates (if not incl with the heads). You'll need careful attention to your valvetrain and oiling to get reliable consistent 6500+ rpm from the stock hydraulic roller lifters. |

Actually they are not only for cleveland. You can buy them already set up for windsor blocks and even 8.2" and 9.5" deck intakes are available. However the intakes are carb type single plane high rise. So you'd still need to modify a 5.0 style intake(if wanted to maintain any low end torque) to fit and there is header considerations and of course the 5.0 accessories won't just bolt on either. This is TickXR on flatmates computer
I just come back from talking with old friend of mine Colin Lloyd, anyone in drag racing fraternity will know he holds pro stock championsip last 3 years and builds his own motors so as far as i'm concerned when he speaks i LISTEN plus he's also person who is building my motor After taking into account the limiting factors that have been bought to my attention and discussing these with Col we have decided to leave the AFR heads off this motor and save that option for my TE build What we have decided to use is instead a iron cylinder head that flows roughly around 420 out of the box and roughly 480-500 after he plays with the bowls and runners a lil The heads are KIWI PRO items but the company that made them were bought out and are now known as PRO TOP LINE cylinder heads Heads are ordered and should be finished complete with all port work and roller rockers fitted by end next week Will post some pics when i have them

Yeah, those Pro Topline heads are very good too.
They where actually bought by Comp Cams in the states last year (early this year?), and are now being sold under their old cylinder head brand "Racing Head Services" aka RHS. |
