was useing castrol magnetic 10-40 but after changing rocker cover gasket the inside of the motor was coated with brown stain, looked like i had never changed oil, but i change every 5000 and filter, so have changed to gtx3, i running au motor so need the 10 visc at start up etc.
watch the thick oils they put extra load on the oil pump dirve , will cause them to fail

So ignoring the Penrite stuff, what would be best for my 302? 1993.
A mate just put some synthetic valvoline stuff in, seems to go alright too. I'm needing to do an oil changed when i get the car going this week so any suggestions? I'm swinging to the castrol or Fuchs camps, They market the Fuchs oils big time here at the BNT shops and some places, Castrol is also a big player in most shops here. |

i know not many ppl like it but i started using fuchs 10W (i think) in winter then 15 or 20 in summer, works great, oil pressure is always perfect and theres never any noise on startup/under load. I did use HPR10/30 or something similar before and it was on par slight price difference, but i do oil changes every 5-10k depending on whats its been doing. A good quality filter is also essential i brought some K&N filters from the states and i think this has been the biggest benefit of stopping noise on startup.
my .02c

It's German made so it must be good stuff. I trust anything made by those fellas. |

The 5.0 has larger clearances than the latter models 6's...
20/50 for the V8 esp in summer .. But 6's are better with lower visc oils 10/40... 5/40 in winter...

I only use Shell Helix Plus
Tried Penrite and Magnatec. I have no urges to put a 60w in my engine and the magnatec i used in the BP motor drank it in 1 week.

Out of these two, what would you recommend.... Castrol Edge Sport full synthetic, or Nulon full synthetic? The Nulon is on special at the moment for $57. What visc. do i use? 10-30 10-40 15-40 etc etc

{USERNAME} wrote: Penrite burnt itself out too quickly for my liking. Went black and smelt burnt after 5000kms however other members have better success with it. Going black early is a GOOD thing. It means the oil is picking up contaminants from the engine. I have always used Penrite semi-synthetic HPR 30 (engine rebuilt 200,000km ago) with no oil usage or start up noise, ever. Mike

im back to using Valvoline semi synthetic Dura Blend 15w-50 and guess what, im getting 40kms more per tank that i lost when i used Nulon 15w-40.
Engine is smoother and sounds way better and drives better as well Ive used Valvoline Engine armor 15w-40 and Valvoline semi synthetic Dura Blend 15w-50 for the past 4 yrs and now that i try Nulon becuz ppl rave about it and its an aussie brand which id like to support, but forget about it im sticking with Valvoline.

I still don't know what to make of this thread?
Would I go for HPR 15 or HPR 30 in my AU 302? I can't work out if its good to have thicker oil to lubricate better when cold(HPR 30) or thinner oil so it gets pumped through quicker when cold(HPR 15)??
