Hi,
The starter motor in my 99 Falcon XL Ute (5.0L Auto) has died and I need a new one. I was wondering whether it would be better to get a brand new one or will a second hand one from a wreckers suffice? Also I've been reading other topics about other peoples starter motors that for some models you can replace it with a difference model one (like E series) that has a bit more kick, can I do this with my XL? I'm probably going to give this a go myself. I figure I'll just need some tools, spanners, screwdriver? and maybe a couple ramps to get under the vehicle. Last question , how much do they usually go for? $150-$200? Any help would be great! Regards. |

EB-AU 5.0L starters are the same.
The bolts can be fun to get at. I usually jack the car up with a trolley jack under the K-member, put it on stands and slide under on a creeper. |

Thanks! Shouldn't be any cost difference between an EB and an XL one then? Have any input on buying a brand new one vs wreckers? I don't have any ramps where I am but if I can get the car started and get to my destination I can source some . Thanks! |

When it comes to alternators and starters, dont buy 2nd hand rubbish unless you can get if for next to nothing. You will just end up in the same position you are now. A good quality aftermarket brand new one is under $300 full retail.
There is bugger all difference between the AU and the earlier ones. The EB/D/F/L has 3 threaded mounting holes, the AU has 2 plus one with a locating dowel. Both will interchange. Both are about 1.4-1.5kw. Just remember to disconnect the battery before taking the main power lead off as its the heaviest gauge cable in the car and is totally unfused. |

My AU had a 3 bolt starter. There was no locating dowel.....

Its not a solid dowel, a bolt still goes through it. Its the top left bolt hole. I'll post comparison pics tomorrow when I'm at work.

2nd hand units are a bit of hit & miss, some will only last a few mths, others will last years, like the AU starter I have in my Eb Ghia. Been there for about 4 years now, it was at least a few years old when it was purchased 2nd hand. Your mileage may vary.
However, I reckon you should be able to pickup a new unit aftermarket for around $200 to $300, so if you can afford it, it would be a good piece of mind thing. Cheers ToranaGuy

Here are the two different starters. AU has the locating dowell, and EB-EL usually has a push on terminal for the crank wire, AU has 6mm stud as well as the push on.
EB-EL AU (Also suits Taurus V6) |
