You can use either a 157t flexplate with a small bell C4 or a 164T flexplate with large bell C4.
Your EL already has a 164T flexplate with the correct 50oz imbalance and I think the converter bolt circle is the same. The large bell C4 is therefore the easier choice. You will also have a starter on the drivers side so it's a good idea to get one of those mini starters to allow header clearance. |

Just a word of caution when buying your C4. I have found it very difficult to obtain a 50oz-in 157 tooth flex plate to suit the early C4 (aka C4, C5, C9) transmissions. 28oz-in 157 tooth is no problem, just the later imbalance with the smaller diameter that has been problematic. It may be different in Australia, but I'd check availability before buying because you must run 50oz-in imbalance with any 302W produced after 1981. As XR9UTE says, the standard 5.0 flex plate fits the "pan fill" C4 (aka C10) transmission which uses a 164 tooth flex plate. The sandwich plate needs to be swapped to suit the C4 transmaission as well.

wow thats handy info. Yeh i got some headers and i was thinkin the starter wouldnt clear them if i ran a top loader or standard au box. So c4 it is then. I got no idea what starter to get but hopefully i can sort that out later. Any of you guys know whats a good converter rpm i should run?

Stall speed is entirely dependant on your engine/vehicle combo.

It's just the way they are balanced.. They are externally balanced early had 28oz while latter model has 50oz I guess less counterweights?? The 28 oz can be increased to 50oz on a balancing machine.. http://www.rpmmachine.com/engine-balancing.shtml

{USERNAME} wrote: im doin a c4 conversion in my el and as far as ive been told u need a small bosch starter and a 164 tooth flywheel apart from that no dramas i have a C4 box behind my Turbo V8 ED XR. I have an EL K frame and used an AU starter, std e series flex plate, tailsaft and shifter. To make if fit you'll need to notch out some of the nose of the AU starter and move the engine an inch back in the engine bay for the starter to clear the steering. This also allows the std tailshaft to be used and the factory shifter can be modified to suit (c4 linkage is on the oppisite side to the std auto) i cut off the plate with the notches and welded it on the other side allowing me to spin the shifter 180 degrees To move the engine back all you need to do is swap the top plates between the engine and engine mounts from left to right. By moving the engine back it cuts down the clearance between the rear of the sump to almost nothing i fixed this by fitting a 3mm washer between the top plate and engine mount, i used a washer i found its approx 3mm thick and 50mm wide i have a larger bell c4 more commonly fitted to clevo's, earlier windsor had the smaller bell... or so i've been told anyway i guess the benefits of doing this the way i have are improved weight distribution by moving the engine back and allowing the use of standard ford equipment for easy replacement starter clearance and if you look close you can see the sump to k frame clearance

xr8boy, that bit about moving the engine back an inch sounds really good, but your description of how you did it has me lost. Could you please explain it differently? I'm not sure what a "top plate" is. Can an EB-ED V8 K member be used, or is it only for EF-EL V8 K members (or are these the same as 6 cyl K members for EF upwards??). Do youuse EB-ED V8 engine mounts, or EF onwards engine mounts?
Lots of questions I know, but you have a really good idea that I may want to use in the future.

This only applies to EF EL i6 and V8 k frames as they run a different type of engine mount to the ED and earlier. The plate/bracket i refer to bolts to the top of the engine mount and to the engine block. Everything in my ED is EL spec. K frame, engine mounts and all suspension arms are all EL
Passenger side Drivers side There are subtle differences between the EF and EL k frames regarding suspension geometry but they both bolt straight into any e series falcon offering a substantial improvement in the earlier models EA - ED I was pleasantly surprised how easy it is to fit a C4 behind a V8 in an E series falcon, i did it in a few hours one arvo. I dont think i even had time to drink a 6 pack it was in that quick

Thanks for taking the time to explain and provide pictures. This is a great solution to a common problem which I'm sure will help others besides me.

It's a great way to get much better engine mounts too.
