Just get a 429 or 460 big block. But in all fairness the windsor has more aftermarket support where as the clevland was an engine that was designed for grunt by the tone.

I have to say Cleveland using more factory parts, but Windsor going aftermarket, back in Cleveland's day (when it was first built before smog control killed it) it was number one small block (but you can hardly call it small LOL), higher performance than any Chev etc in its day.
But today is different, Windsors hung around longer so USA support is much higher if you go all aftermarket. And don't forget GTHO II and III had Clevelands in them for a reason, not a Windsor. If you want to use factory parts as much as possible, I would make a 351W Boss, Cleveland heads because of port size and design, Windsor block because generally thicker bores. There is a few thick cylinder walled Clevelands out there, but it is hard finding them plus they had problems with core shift, so not all of those are equal. (Aussie build XE era and special truck, 60 thou oversize supposedly possible) I want to go aftermarket heads on my 351W (currently it is only in pieces without heads), aftermarket 4 bolt mains caps (after crack and thickness checking), 6.580" 400M length rods (aftermarket), low compression forged pistons , roller cam and retrofit kit etc etc but this dream will probably happen when "anyone" can spot grey hair on my head, trust me that will be a long time, going bald on the other hand will be sooner. {USERNAME} wrote: As a quick Q? What would a stripped cleavo block weigh? Would it be a one man lift?
Yep it can be a one man lift, but it ain't light, I have no idea on the weight, weighs closer to a 302W short block assembly , but there is much more to grab with just a bare Cleveland block, just got to watch for sharp corners. Bare 302W and 5.0L blocks are light as, just pick up and put in the boot, I wouldn't do it with a Clevo unless you were hulk like, end up with a bad back, I "could" lift them but I don't think I could safely lift them to put them on a bench etc (can't remember trying). So I don't think the Clevo block weighs that much, but add some large heavy heads, large intake either alloy or cast iron (most stock with cast iron) compared to 302W, large heavy crank (compared to any small block) and you end up with a bloody heavy small block. I wouldn't be surprised if a stock Windsor head weigh less than 2/3's of a Cleveland head, well they feel like that. Here is a bit of Trivia for you, mate owns a Pontiac Trans-am Firebird, it is fitted with a Pontiac 455, that block is smaller and lighter (interesting casting design) than a Cleveland, the block is basically the same for the Pontiac 350-400.

Clevo will pull like an 18 year old boy.
Windsor will scream like an 18 year old girl.

yeah, i can lift mine on and off the engine stand, with heads, its a lot heavyer, 2 full heads, weigh as much as teh block itself.

I just love the sound of the clevo. Went over my old neighbors house on saturday and his bro has an XE esp with a worked 351 clevo. He gave it a few quick stabbs of the throttle and when that tacho got up near 7000rpm i must say that I've never cracked a fat like that in my life. even though it had a stock exhaust dropped just after the muffler (about under the B pillar) it made all the right sounds. Down low, up high and everywhere in between. The idle of an EFI windsor s**t me to tears. It doesn't matter what most people seem to do with them, down low in the rev range they sound like crap and don't get me excited until at least 4000rpm. If they didn't drone so much, instead, sound sharp like a old school car then I'd be impressed.

had a 351 clevo in an XD when i was 20 (my first v8) i'm sure that it would eat my injected windsor for breakfast. they are both still great fun and a s**t load better than a 253 or 308 holden donk
