the centre console gets bloody hot after a 20min drive in the xr. had a look under neath and the top half of the cat heat shielding has been removed by previous owner :S.
my question is would that exhaust wrap stuff be able to withstand the heat if wrapped around the cats. or this a bad idea for some other reason? i would prefferably like to go down the exhaust wrapping path as i dont want to either screw heat shield to the floor pan or or start sticking dynamat type stuff to the floor pan either. any help is mush appreciated

be sure to check that the cats havent collapsed inside causing a bottleneck and more heat retention.
maybe a bit of heat sheild would be the way to go.

I the header wrap can withstand the heat of the headers after it's just come out of the head were the explosion happened I would think it would withstand the heat of the cat converters - considering the gas has traveled a bit of a way by then and possibly cooled down a bit in the process.

the operating temperature of a functioning cat converter is in the order of 800 degrees celcius (core temp). and the converter actually heats the air passing through it. (how much hotter depends on how rich or lean the engine is running.)
where as the surface temp of a set of extractors is more in the order of 500C im not sure how hot the casing of a cat converter gets but i wouldnt mind betting its equal to if not hotter than an extractor primary tube.. my 2c as far as wrapping the cats, my car also gets a rather warm floor pan after some exxcited driving, but i dont think wrapping the cats will do them any good, wether the heat wrap can take it or not. if you over heat them you could melt the catalyst which would result in them needing to be replaced. best solution would be to construct some sort of heat shielding. mitch

you are a dumb s**t arnt you! as mitchg911 said the cats get hotter than the headers!! they do this so the catalyst inside works how u think fires under cars start when they get parked on grass? the cat is that how it ignites the grass! i would also advise against wrapping the cats best idea is to pull the exhaust off and get some replacement heat sheilding made up under teh car floor

Weld another tin plate across the top of them ??
If they get too hot ? It's a sign engine is runing rich... Wraping them would make them more efficiant...But might get get caught on ground clearance and pull off ??

thanks for the responses. im going to wrap the headers to help keep engine bay temps down so hopefully.
as for the cats i was looking through the repco performance catalogu and noticed they have sheets of heat shield (just like the stuff is factory on the xr6t's) so ill price that up and hopefully if its not ridiculously expensive ill give that a shot. again thank-you for the responses cheers

i wouldnt wrap the cats either, they prob wont last aslong. ive seen heat wrap cause rust on extractors due to moisture being trapped under the tape so i wouldnt recomend that but thats just my 2c. on my xr8 ive got stainless heat sheilds above the cats and muffler against the floor pan, you wouldnt know they were there untill you get her up on a hoist. how old are your cats? if they are that hot that it heats up your console id start looking at a blocked cat or car running rich as fuk.

cats are standards from an eb. the original ef ones were "modified" by previous owner. i doubt the car car is running rich as i have pretty good fuel economy bout 450k's to a tank of pulp. how would i go about checking for blocked cats???? cheers

unbolt them and try to stick something through them if you cant take a coal chisel and a 4 pound hammer and clear the obstruction
this should fix the heat issues

if it has excessive heat then they are probably stuffed. cats usualy need replacing after 100,000 kms. its a good excuse to go hi-flo

I'd wrap the exhaust piping in spots you feel it is hot in the cabin and use heat shielding for the cats.
The only concern (IMHO) with the thermal wrapping is having it caught on something or even the general wear and tear from winter to summer months with the bottom of the car getting continually wet and then dried out - the thermal wrap will only last 'so' long exposed to such conditions...it also becomes quite brittle if you move it after it has been on for a while. Good luck with it - let us know how you go |
