I have an eb series 1 xr8 and i have a major heating problem, i have replaced the top hose, water pump, thermostat, thermostat housing, temp sender, temp gauge and air temp sensor, but still gets hot when you give her the boot or when climbing hills, when descending down hills she cools off the only thing i can put it down to is the trans is making her overheat, i have fushed and flushed the system and i am using anti freeze and anti boil coolant, have put el thermos on it and it still hasn't changed. does any 1 have any ideas

possibly a blocked radiator or the impeller vanes on the water pump are badly corroded reducing water flow through the block semi-functional thermostat (not opening fully) blocked heater core again reducing flow around the block

how bad was the coolent, was it dirty or was it really rusty orange s**t

all parts replaced with brand spanky new parts, new pump only had it off like a week ago and the impeller is new as and when flushing the water is good no rust scale or corrosion. Has a $40 high flow thermostat and a new housing new hoses etc. I was told to get a desert cooler radiator but i figure that if it was fitted with the radiator thats in it then it should be fine with that 1. Was thinking of removing the air con radiator as the pump is buggerd and i can't use the air con due to hey fever and stuff but i am guessing that probably wont be any better, have washed the radiator fins of bugs and creepys 2 still no difference

i would have the radiator flushed professionally, they can look good on the outside but when u pull a end tank off they can be blocked 1/3, 1/2, or even more up the core, inside the tubes.
and the water u are flushing though could just be going thru the top half of the radiator

having replaced everything but the radiator u dont have much left to try.
a flush will cost u around $75 and u would know that it was that or not

what else is left to try ...blocked head gasket coolant holes?

well yeh,if you have replaced everything bar the radiator then it almost sae to say that's you problem. One bit of advice is spend t extra $$$ and get a decent oversized raditor.

I stinged out and bought a repco special. temps a fine when the weather is below approx 25deg but above that sitting in traffic and the needle just rises. It doesn't overheat but it gets a little to hot for my liking. :s

have u replaced the bottom hose, do they use a spring inside them still? to stop the sides sucking together, therefore reducing the flow?

Almost certainly the radiator, they tend to get full of crap with age. If it's the original I wouldn't bother getting it cleaned/rodded out, the plastic tanks are probably brittle and ready to break. New 32mm thick alluminium core radiators can be had for $150 delivered on ebay.

Exact same problem, I even had my radiator flushed and cleaned the previous year by a radiator shop, but my mechanic re-filled it again with cheap a** coolent when he did the water pump 6 months later and the coolent turned to little particles (look like rocks and sand) and blocked about 7 cms of the bottom tank.

100% your radiator needs a proper clean.

You describe a classic blocked radiator set of symptoms - overheats going up hill, cools going down, original 18 year old radiator, surrounding parts recently replaced.

The tubes in the original radiators are very narrow and fill with crap. I have a half blocked one on my test bed. With the engine up to temp you can hold your hand on the bottom 1/3 of the cooling fins. They are maybe 35°C max.

Buy a new radiator, heavy duty preferably.

clutch fan sounds like its worn out
test the fan when the car is hot and it should be hard to turn and easier to turn when dead cold
i had this prob with my old eb1 when i put the a/c on and the new clutch hub fixed it. but get the radiator cleaned and checked also as mine split the next week.
