Hi All. I know that this is an XD, XE, XF forum and I have one of each of those but the current project is puting my XL back on the road after a complete rebuild. I got hold of a motor that was supose to have done only 5K since it was built. I have pulled the head off it and can still see the cross hatch of the hone marks so could be a good one. Anyway, does any one know the stroke of the 170 and 200 motor so I can work out what it is..... Next, what if I put my 144 head back on the this motor which I think is a 170. Bout time I put some photos up of the XF now it is all finished... Regards XFSteve

http://falconperformance.sundog.net/
http://falconperformance.sundog.net/facts.asp 170 Bore stroke - 3.50/2.94 200 Bore Stroke - 3.68/3.13 Its an American site that may help you a bit. I think the XL only came with a 144 - 170, the XMs were the first with the 200s. You can check the crank, on the counterweights they do have the cubic capacity on them. |

Thanks Guys,
I am even more confused. This engine has a 3.68 bore and a 3.5 stroke. Steve

Might be a 221 cubic inch out of an XT or XW. They have a 3.68 bore, but has a smaller stroke, about 3.4 from memory ???

Thanks for that. It has hydraulic lifters!!! Does that shed any extra light on it. All six bores are in top condition. Tops of pistons 'wiped clean'. Spent ALL DAY stripping back the block to bare metal. Pull the sump off tomorrow and have a look at the bottom end. Steve

There are three bolts that hold on the water pump.

Took off the sump and its got 221 on the counterweight. Grin. Probably have a bit more grunt than the tired 144 then. Grin.

Got the motor just about sorted out but looking for a Holley Carb to put on the 221. Have a number of the smaller ones but bit small in the bore. Also looking for a flywheel. Motor came out of a auto... Anyone in Perth go a carb or a flywheel for a 221 looking for a good home.

Spent the long weekend (WA) detailing the engine bay of the 62 XL ready to put in the new 221 when complete. The rest of the car is still in primer waiting for the weather to warm up and dry out... Got to swap out the bell housing yet as the 144 bell housing is not compatiable with the 221 motor.

The 221cu into the XL coming along in leaps and bounds. Got the head back from Sabre Performance Engineering in Briggs Street Welshpool on Friday. Absolute top job. Inserts, New valves, K sleeves, ground on both the cylinder face and the exhaust. Did the job in a week!!!. Head is now painted and on the block. Ended up with new mains and big end shells as you have to lift out the crank to put in a new rear seal. Crank was perfect and still STD. New hydraulic lifters. New timing chain. New harmonic balancer. New water pump. New oil pump. Overhaul petrol pump. Still got the distributor and carburettor of overhaul.
Replaced right hand sill on the body last week end. Lot of laying on your back, grinding and welding. Still got the front and rear of the sill to shape up yet. Did the left before winter (what there was of it). The rest of the body is finished in primer. Bonnet, boot, doors and guards are finished. I will update in a week or so on the progress. STILL LOOKING FOR A FLYWHEEL and BELL HOUSING. (3 speed manual) Cheers XFSteve

The 221 is a great little engine!
I had one in my XP sedan, it went very well indeed. All the best with the rebuild, and great to see another early Falcon being built up. |
