If someone has put a 250 pre crossflow and a borgwarner 35 auto from an XB into an early Falcon, could they tell me what is needed to be modified to make it fit. Just looking for some cheats or things to keep in mind before I start. The 144 and 2 spd is not real flash but it looks like the 250 is going to be a bit of a job to make things work. If you've done this engine swap, I would like to hear what you think. Was it worth it? I'm not worried about doing the modifications but the XL is a real nice car and I dont want to butcher it too much if I can help it.

I have put 250's into XP's before, So an XL is about the same.

The main difference is the XL has a small trans tunnel than the XP, So it takes a bit of work to get the B/W 35 to fit in there -It's a tight fit, but it can be done.

Have you got a complete donor XB?

No dont have a whole car. Just all the running gear from an XR that was taken out for a V8 conversion. Motor and tranny was originally from an XB though, same as XR 200/221 block I think.

The 250 is a lot longer & taller than the earlier 144 - 221's, which causes radiator clearance problems and the sump hits on the swaybar & the draglink.

Use an aftermarket flex fan without any fan spacers & fit the XB 250 radiator with flat brackets to mount it up to the original XL radiator mounting holes.

Put 5-10mm flat plate spacers between the original chassis brackets to engine mounts & it will clear the sump & draglink. The original XB trans crossmember can be widened to suit the XL chassis rails.

If you are going to use the original XL diff, Shorten the XB shaft & adapt the rear of the XL shaft so it all bolts up.

An early Falcon weighs about 500KG's less than an XB, the 250 really makes a bid difference, But it requires an engineers certificate to make it legal (disc brakes, fan heater, seat belts, windscreen washers etc) - In NSW, the RTA want the same requirements as if you were fitting a V8..

Thanks mate, That's some good info. The disc brakes cleaned up well also. Took a bit to get the pistons out and the rusted wheel nut off but they're good now.

Thats good, I was wondering how you went with them.

The ideal engine swap in an early Falcon is the 221 if you don't want the hassles with rego etc, being the same size as a 170, It can be painted up to look like a 170.They are a lot more revvier than a 250 and if you can get hold of a XP B/W35, It will bolt up easier - But it still needs the trans tunnel "modification" in an XL..

But they are becoming hard to get - Being only available in XT-XW's. A lot of 221's donated their cranks to make stroker Holden 6cyl red motors. A mate had one in his aluminium headed, triple Weber'd FC - And it used to fly!

But if the 250 XB conversion is a freebie - Go for it.

A 170 engine block has only 3 welsh plugs on the exhaust side......and 4 main caps.
188,200,221 had 7 main bearings.

Think I might keep searching for a good 170 - 221. Got the 250 for next to nothing so doesnt matter if I use it or not. My brother has an XT that he put a 302W into. The original 221 sat under his house for years and he took it to the dump about 6 months ago. He asked me if I wanted it but I wasnt looking for one back then so I said no. Typical. Thanks for the welsh plug tip cjh, thats a nice easy way to see roughly what it is.

It's mainly the water pump area that's different. The 250 pump is longer & they have 4 mounting bolts, 144 - 221 only have 3 - you cannot interchange the pumps.

If you want to run the standard 250 fan, You have to chop out the radiator support panel to get the clearance. It is much easier (and neater) to use a flex fan or thermo's.

The early sixes had a single pulley groove harmonic balancer......so the water pump could be shorter.

The early pump is shorter,But the impeller hole in the 250 block is nearly as big as the earlier pump + 4 mounting bolts verse 3 bolts = It won't fit...

Yeah a v8 would be more worth it rather than stuffin around with pre cross flow 6's but this ones for my daughter. I have actually seen this orange one in the flesh. It's a very nice car. About as good as they get.
