hey all,
the beloved FD LTD of mine, had some issues with the door handles before i purchased it, which was fine, i could still open all the doors either by the outside or inside door handle... until today that it... the drivers door, doesnt open from the outside, had to do the hand out the window and open it from the outside trick.... i think that door wasnt hung correctly or something, coz it used to very hard to open - had to 'lift' on the handle as well as try to release the catch... the handle broke... so now i cant get into the drivers seat thru the door... i learnt to climb in and out through the Sunroof today, its quite easy actually - easier than climbing thru from the backseat at least. so the door is shut... and both handles f**k. whats the easiest way to go about fixing it? I have ZL sitting around for spares, which i can raid for parts if need be. i know - lame question im sure, but i never had to deal with this problem on my previous Xseries falcons....

Take the door trim off and look at where the door handle rods activate to open the door handle.
The handle can slip out of its groove and not catch the runner to allow the door to open.

Plenty of ppl whinge about the handles, most problems occur with the bloody great heavy doors... if you gotta lift on the handle to release the door, you gotta line the door up properly. you might find the bushes need replacing, the ones on the hinge pins, you can buy bushes or complete repair kits. sometimes the door itself is stuffed, it cracks down the bottom where the hinge is bolted.
To fix it for good, you`ll have to consider the above and rectify, another tip is to get the handle out easily, use a long 1/4 extension to reach through the little hole on the inside of the door, you`ll see it when you get the trim off... Did like 5 handles in the 1st couple mnths on the wagon, set the doors up and aint done another in 4 years. JAIKAI |

Check the rest of the system for opening the doors. Also check the door hinges. If they're worn, the door drops, makes it hard to operate the door handles. Also the internal latch, and external latch wear out, also making it hard to open. Check that the door seals aren't getting in the way too.
I've lost count of how many I've had to fix over the years.

I've lost count of how many I've had to fix over the years. i never had the 'pleasure' of having to do it... Rocky aint that far away... wanna come up to mackay and fix mine fo me? il pay ya! lol jk.. but seriously. the drivers door definatly has a 'drop' when you open the door, so i knew that it was on the way out before i got it... i might have a look at the car thisweekend sometime - depending on if i have time.

Got a ZL which I've owned for 10 yrs... bloody door handles broke all the time so I replaced the front door hinges and passenger door which had bottom hinge welded to the door by prior owner... took a while to sort out the door hanging problem but then it opened perfectly.
Since then I've only broken 2 handles in about 2 yrs. but I learnt a little trick when they break it's usually the little rivot that holds the spring and lever in place. Just tap it and replace with a suitable sized threaded screw or bolt and it will never break again. Hope that helps ... I've got one in the garage I plan to redo ... when I do I'll photograph the procedure and put it up here for others to see... Yep qtr inch drive with 7 mil head... you need to push up the lever with the socket on the one side to drive it in. I can change one of those door handles in just on 5 minutes these days.

I think it has more to do with the shape of the handle than the quality of them. They just fatigue and break. the handles aren't really hard to replace, just a couple of screws. Although it can be an effort to get to the screws inside the door and under the window.

Original Cortina ones are made from steel not alloy. I used to drill and tap a screw into where the alloy has been peened over the washer (where 95% of them break).
You could also look into fitting a later model handle to the car also. |

when you open the doors put youre thumb on top.fingers under the handle and sort of push down with youre thumb as youre opening....this takes a fair bit of pressure of em.

them bloody door handles!
i dont think i mentioned in the original post, that the drivers door internal handle didnt open either... so it made it a little hard to open the door and remove the trim, but we got there eventually by using a screw driver to push down on the lever that the internal mechinism of the outside handle... we didnt get around to fixing the exterior handle, but we managed to fix the internal handle, turns out the plastic pivot piece behind the armrest was in a word.. screwed. pulled a matching part off the ZL i just happen to have laying around, and fitted it back up - took a while to work out which of the 3 holes to use on one side, and which way up it went! so at least i am one step ahead from when i brought the car, it can be opened from the inside at least. one other thing.. while im typing, the central locking actuator in the drivers door is not attached to anything.. it is literally laying in the bottom of the door cavity - with the plug still attached to it.. can anyone shed some light on where the rod from the actuator runs to / what it operates? cheers
