Hopefilly someone here can help me with this problem. IN early december after driving th old girl about 30 mins the car would misfire, buck and carry on. leave it a couple of hours and it would be fine. However it would srart back doing the same crap again. changed the spark plugs, and rhe coil because i knew the coil was old so i thought that might be the problem and the spark plugs were all dark brown. The car worked good over the xmas period going to esk and laidley on seperate days, no probs. then today it started again. i changed the spark plugs and the coil wire as i ran a check on the old 1 and the resistance was 1.89, whereas the new 1 was 3.13. Car worked beautiful up to deception bay and up until 2 mins from home at everton hills. The miss, was not as bad as prior to the change but its starting again........any ideas what else could be wrong....its an 87 xf efi falcon???

Have a good look at the inside of the dist cap, especially the carbon button. If you replace it, replace the rotor as well.
Also, make sure you havent got a water leak from the heater hose fitting at the front of the head, above the dist. That used to be a common fault, and it would leak water straight onto the dist, causing a misfire.

Problem is still persisting. The t.f.i module is ok. coil changed, spark plugs changed, leads changed, dizzy cap changed..this problem occurs when the car gets hot or like today i booted it up a hill all the way in 2nd, stopped at the lights for 30 secs then when i took off.....easy....it started to miss and carry on...could it be the fuel pump..or the oxygen sensor????

the hall effect module is the black plastic block screwed to the dizzy body
where the rotor button is on the distributor shaft, there is a metal dish underneath it with fingers that pass through the plastic block try to find another dizzy from an EFI XF, its the most painless way out.... |

After changing the dezzy, rotor, cap, coil, 2 dud leads, the spark plugs the computer box, checked all the fuses, the problem stills persists. I got a mechanic out told him what i had done and he took the fuel line off the engine and found no petrol coming through. Checked the pump and found it didnt work. put another 1 in that worked but it wouldnt work properly until the mechanic put another battery on.....mine is 1 year old but for some reason wasnt sending 12 volts thru..only 8 which wasnt enough to work the pump....the car started, however after about 10 mins of driving it started to play up again. What i want to know is, does that green fuel relay fuse, which can only be bought at FORD, found under the bonnet near the brake booster be playing up??Any one had any problems with this relay before?? By the way this mechanic MARK, worked for FORD in adelaide and reckons he has a D.J TE or TF cortina, didnt know d**k made any of them. but yeah...Any idea on how much these fuses cost???thanks

Those relays can play up, the points inside get a bit burnt. Also check connectors, electrical ones, for the fuel pump. Make sure all the earths are good and clean.
Have you done a fuel flow & pressure test??? How are the connectors for the injectors for corrosion??? Does the engine oil dipstick seal, still seal??? How is the oil cap seal???...( Mitsubishi ones fit them too ). How is the rubber hose that goes from the rocker cover to the throttle-body???

I think the problem is that the current is intermittent, its being interrupted and stopping the pump from working...as i am hearing small backfires as i come off the accelerator. When i start the car up after running it, it splutters, i rev it up, it then gets better, but after a while it starts acting up again...so i was wondering if that relay might be acting up...

Went an got an EL relay fuse from a wrecker for 10 bucks cause ford wanted nearly a hundred bucks for 1, but still no joy. As a matter of fact, now when i 1st start the car it takes 3 tries before it starts, the car drives but always after about 10 mins its starts to buck and carry on. When i switch the ignition off the car switches off immediately.. I have to wait at least 1 to 1 and a half hours before the car works/is able to be driven again....

I would pull out oxygen sensor and inspect it, then i would be looking at while idling and missing pull one injector plug off at a time to see if it makes a difference in idle, if you pull one off and it makes no difference chances are you have a dud injector or loose wire. Relays seldom go bad. When it misses also look under at the cat converter to see if it is glowing, that will explain the engine not working till you let it sit again a bit. Make sure you buy a good grade of fuel. good luck mate
