Hey guys i was hoping i could get pointed in the right direction for a engine for my XL Falcon, ive been looking at either a 250 cross-flow or fuel injected 4.1L out of a XF Ghia or a 4.0L in-tech out of a au falcon. im looking for a fairly easy conversion but still to have an engine with a bit of balls about it. Thanks

Thanks There will be more to it than just the engine & trans conversion.....you'll need to update the brakes as well.....and the diff.....and 5 stud wheels.

Ive got the disk brakes comming. and changing changing the diff isnt really a problem.

I think you'll find that a 250 Crossflow will go in rather painlessly, especially if you use the carburettored version of the engine. The engine mounts will be roughly the same as what you have now, it might even bolt up to your current gearbox, you'll need to sort out the radiator, and the accelerator cable, and a few other bits and pieces but shouldn't be too bad. the EFI engine wont be too much different, but you'll need to sort out an EFI fuel pump, wiring and ECU, the OHC on the other hand will be much harder, and may need modified engine mounts, a different gearbox x member and some other stuff, you'll probably need to cut and weld some stuff to make it all work properly with the ohc, but you shouldn't need to with the crossflow.

6 cyl engine mounts are the same XA through at least EL. I know EF onwards had hydraulic mounts but the older style will bolt up to the block.

thanks cjh, Gab 1 and evxr6 for the information. So evxr6 dose that means any six cyl will bolt in to my mounts until el onwards ?

Possibly, but keep in mind that Bellhousing patterns changed in the EA series.

Actually, the engine mount brackets are different....XA to XF are the same, but EA to ED are different....seen it with me own eyes.....they look damn close, but no cigar.
You won't be able to use the old transmission....won't handle the torque, and may not bolt up if it as a narrow block type. You will need to put a brace across under the engine too....IIRC.

Guys used to use Centura diffs....they are still a little too wide depending on what wheels were used. Early Falcons are little cars....I don't fit real well in them at all....with the seat back as far as it goes, the steering wheel is too close, pedals are too close. Before they used Centura diffs, they used the XP Ute diffs....gave them 5 studs. How much is a 'cut n shut' 28 spline, LSD, disc brake later diff worth ???? ( EBII to ED, XG)

Fairly expensive for a decent one. I think im gonna put the 250 x-flow in the falcon, whats diff do you recommend ?
