Howdy, Driving an XE 3sp sedan around till my car is on the road again and its going through something like 22-25L per 100k's...!
On the econogauge I barely get it past 40 (half throttle thereabouts)
I do about 5 trips to work each week (5 mins each way) and maybe one outing, and im down almost $40 in fuel each week from it....its freeken shocking!

Spark plugs arnt that old, air filter is clean, just did an oil change, what the hell is going on?
I mean yeah its an old car but only has 140K on the clock and couldnt be using this much fuel surely! Anything i can check/adjust? I'm fairly mechanical minded but if its technical I'll need a picture or something so I know what I'm doing, Old pushrod falcons arn't my forte!

You could try giving it a tune, the old carby's can be fairly out of wack and still run the engine ok.

The carby 4.1 does bloody guzzle. If the auto choke is working properly youre barely getting it warm in 5 mins. If its running good and the plugs arent black chances are short runs are the culprit. Let it warm up for 30 secs or so and blip the throttle to flick off the choke. :D

Sounds like the carby isn't right. Try changing the 3 diaphrams on the carby. Also have you checked the mechanical & vacuum advance unit on the dizzy?.

Auot chock can be a problem, check that chock is fully open when engine is at running temp or that carb is not running to rich. That is provided it's not a later model xe with throttle body injection.

Thanks for the reply mate, Since this isn't my car Ive had run it past the grandfather to have a fiddle and he simply put it as "just leave it how it is"

Anyway, hopefully my car is going to back on the road soon and we can get the trans out of this and plop it in his XD then sell this for scrap or whatever.

I think he's one of those "as long as it runs its fine" people.
Still gonna try and have a geez over the workshop manual at TAFE though to suss this out.

Cheers guys
