Try the multimeter black lead on battery negative, and red lead on the engine block to get a reading, and then the red lead on the body somewhere, prob easiest near the shock tower. Do this with the engine running, and all your lights and stuff on to draw a decent load
If you get a reading over 0.2 volts, then replace the earth cables from the engine block to the battery and from battery to the body.

Also then and be careful when you do this one, with the engine running and lights etc on, red lead on the large terminal on the back of the alternator and black lead on the battery + terminal.
If theres a reading of 0.2 or more volts, then run a thick cable from the alternator terminal to the battery +

Have tried a new battery...no difference. The earth over near the ecu is good. If I put the battery on charge for a couple of hours the electrics run fine for about 30 minutes.
Wilkl do the multimeter tests when I get the alternator back. Have already checked resistance in heavy wire from alternator to battery. Got a reading of 1.2. Seemed a little high :? So I tested same wire from back of alternater to fuse-0.2; checked fuse-0.2;checked second length of wire from fuse to battery-0.2. Cleaned all contacts up (even though they looked fine) and still got a reading of 1 to 1.2 :?
Will update on alternator shortly......

Just got alternator back.
Good news: It already had a 110amp alternator in it
Bad news: Its f**k
Turns out that it may have a diode in it that rattled loose from the heatsink. Apparently the voltage output was fine but the amperage wasn't :? .
Anyway the sparky quoted $300 for a new one. Can get them on E-bay for $210 plus $25 bucks freight. These are new alternators not reco. Does that sound like a fair price?

Anyway hopefully that is that problem fixed....now on to the overheating..... :(

Never know, but the overheating issue MAY be coming from the alternator troubles? ie, heat is fine, but that gauge isnt reading right. I know that when my alternator went, changing from low to high beam changed the temperature on the gauge. Still have too many problems with my electrics but :P

Nah she deffinately overheating. Cracked the s**t with it the other day and refused to stop and let it cool down. By the time I got home it had blown the hose off the coolant resevoir and steam was going all over the shop........

After the rooting around done today I firmly believe we fixed the overheating problem. Thermostat was sticky. As far as charging goes....I reckon It's the alternator......get a new one C***!!!!

Alright....had a big afternoon out in the shed, 35+degrees in the shade but with true determination and grit (and a whole lotta beers) I reckon I got it all sussed.
Fuel gauge first: Pulled the sender and pump out. Big job cos I gotta remove half the stereo and sub box etc. There is a real fine wire that completes the curcuit inside the sender; it was broken. Very carefully soldered it back together. Fuel sender problem solved.
Overheating: definately a combination of thermostat and radiator cap. Cut the guts out of the thermostat (can't get one in Bordertown; going to Naracoorte tomorrow) and put it back in. Temporarily using a 13 psi cap (can't get the right one here so dug one up out of my parts bin). Only overheated when excessive revs were used ie. when the water pump was pumping way too fast and thermostat was not in place to slow water flow.
Now for the charging: This was the hardest problem to solve and am still not 100% I fixed it. Alternator was tested and returned a charge of over 13.7v and 90 amps. I didn't think this was too bad. Got rid of piddly little body earth wire and replaced with one canabilised off the starter on the 720 Datto. Noticed then that battery light was flickering. Hadn't noticed this before cos shed doors were open and it was very faint. I now think the problem was in the plug for the alternator. When I wiggled it (the little clip for holding it in was broken :? ) the light would flicker. So put a blob of silicon on it plugged it back in and may have solved the problem 8-)

Sorry for the 3 page essay but think it was important to deal with each issue as it turns out they were individual and not connected.

BTW Falcon69 I will still get that Alternator off ya. Might need it for the car yet. So you have a PM.
Cheers to everyone that gave me advice. If I see ya round I'll buy you a beer.

Mate, this might not help, but just two weeks ago I was having the same dramas with my XH. It completly had me stuffed so I sent it off to Hillis Ford in Wagga. Of all the things it was the leads. They had gone to buggery inside and were leaking voltage left, right and center. $100 and a new set of leads fitted, the overheating and weird elec. crap, Gone.
