yeh mate the cables get s**t in them and thats the cause pull the cable out and spray carby clean or something through it and just spin it by hand to try and clean the crap out if its too bad tho you will need a new cable

make sure you lube the cable with new grease or it will bounce just as much

if the inner cable is rooted because of lack of grease, you may need a new one.

What about one that won't work at all??? I have a 4 spd XB as well, speedo hasn't worked in years - I've tried replacing plastic gear in the gearbox 3 times to no avail. When I've had the cable disconnected I've given it a spin by hand, speedo seems to work... I gave up in disgust a year ago but I still would like a working speedo - anyone got any ideas? Its like the gear (plastic ) just isn't meshing at all with the bigger gear in the gearbox -- I kinda had a theory that maybe there a broken bit of the little end shaft on the plastic gear broken inside the pilot hole it goes into in the gearbox?? HELP!!

inside the yoke of the gearbox there is a gear attatched to the output shaft.
it drives the speedo gear, which drives the inner cable, which goes to your speedo. take the speedo out, make sure the inner cable is pushed in all the way. go for a drive. does the cable turn?

The plastic gear that is fitted on to the output shaft have a tendancy to move on the shaft and need to be realigned, that and dodgey cables is the most common cause of speedo problems on early model Fords

Hi Flopper,
the gear you are talking about, do you mean the larger gear inside the gearbox needs to be re aligned? How do you do that?? Or, if you are talking about the smaller gear on the speedo cable, again; how do you align them? I reckon by the sounds you are onto something here cos as I say, the cable and actual speedo seem ok...

Yes the one inside the rear housing on the gear box, as i said it is a very common problem, it is easily rectified if the internal gear is not damaged.
If you have the box out of the car remove the 3 bolts from the shifter mounting and the four bolts from the extension housing, slide the extension housing off to expose the drive gear, move it in the direction required (check the position of the drive before removing the housing) If the box is still in the car you will need to remove the tail shaft, the speedo cable and the gearbox cross member, dont forget to support the engine and box, follow the above steps. I have a few Gregory's manuals here if you get stuck PM me Rex

I had a problem similar to this with my old Corona. It would wave around and if it got enough momentum it would fly over to something crazy like 180km/h. It turned out that it was the speedo itself that was f**k. Cost an arm and a leg to have repaired because they had to pull the cluster out and freight it to a repair mob. Not sure if Falcons have similar problems or not tho.
