I've got a '97 XH ute, 6 cylinder and auto box.

When it gets into top gear (on an easy throttle this is around 70kph) I can hear, but more feel a rumbling that isn't present in any other gear.

I'm assuming it's the gearbox rather than anything else, but open to suggestions.

Any comments?

Hi,

Noises can be very hard to track down, it may be more the speed than the gear. Running it on a hoist is one way, but I would get a mate to sit with me and have a listen. Dont say anything before and have the windows down. Try combinations of gear and throttle, even put it in Neutral. See what you can come up with or even take it to a good Trans. shop and ask for a quote / diag. Most things have common faults, and the people that work on them all the time can often tell you what is wrong with out even driving it.

torque converter. When it locks up it may be worn out

A search did suggest to me that his may be the problem and since reading about it I've been more aware of what the box is doing.

It does seem very much like the TC is making that hard link and causing the vibes. But, I thought the TC locked up in other gears too and this definitely doesn't happen at any other time.

will lock up in 3rd and 4th. But under light throttle and high speeds. 3rd may really only happen if you were doing like 100 and towing

Good to know.

Could I get the 3rd gear lock up by using the stick to put it in 3rd?

yeh. do like 100km/h. manually put it into 3rd. then hold a steady speed and it should lock up

You can select 3rd, and let it change up as normal - TC should lock.

ECU pin 11 is the S7 solenoid power, so put a 12v light, or LED and resistor between it and earth, so you can see when it gets power, and hence TC should lock up.

From memory also, the tailshaft has a front circular damper that reduces TC rumble or 'boom'.

Cheers snap,

I saw somewhere else that someone had put an override on their TC and by applying 12v they could force it to lock up.

If it's as simple as that I might try tapping a 12v supply onto pin 11 with a switch.

Awesome help

Use Wazza's setup gearbox-suspension-brake-driveline-f4/torque-converter-lock-up-override-circuit-t36733.html

Little update,

I tried locking it in 3rd and was very easy on the gas getting up to speed with little eases off now and again. I think I got the TC to lock up, but I couldn't replicate the rumble in 4th. I'll do the light on S7 to make sure, but it seems to be associated with 4th gear only.

When in 4th and the box in econ mode the revs will drop from over 2k to 1.5k at about 70kph when I hold a steady throttle, that seems like long drop to be solely from the TC lock up, is that normal operation?
