hey all,
as im sure its becoming apparent, i have a ZL that im doing up She currently has the standard 70Amp alternator on it, and i wanna upgrade it - coz when i turnt he indicators on (headlights on & on the brakes) the battery light glows a lil in time with the flashing. (it has a new battery on it newayz, i can get a hold of a 100Amp alternator thru a mechanic i know, my question is, will the standard wiring be able to handle that much current? or will it be likely to melt / burn out? (iv got plans for a big stezza eventually, jst wanna make sure that it will be able to power it kinda thing - and the current alt is on the way out atm...) thanks in advance

i got a 120amp alt in my XD plenty of power it's a multi fit one just had to put washers in to make it line up with belt works great i needed the power as my batery is in the boot

the wiring should handle the current no dramas,
just make sure u check the condition of teh wiring to and from the alt.. if it looks s**t replace it! be good if the new alt comes with a internal regulator as well, and if poss get a 120+ amp alt if a big stez is on the cards a bigger alt will not be bad for the car. aslo add an extra earthing wire from the engine to the body and from the body to the battery.

im eventually gunna move the battery in the ZL to the boot too thanks for the reply

the standard wiring will be fine
the stock alternator should be 55-60A, and they can be rewound to ~80A IIRC

im sure i read somewhere that the standard efi alternator on these is 70amps and that the carby alternators are around the 55 / 60 amps... *gets gregories out to check it out* - il have to double check that now
so the current alt can be re-wound? i wanted to look into that when i had a ZK in perth, but i was told that to get more Amps outa it, id need a bigger alt - as int he whole body - the whole unit...

IIRC some of the earlier alternators had a smaller casing, but the later XF's with the 60A alt had the large case..... tho i've got a 50A alt from an XE here that's physically identical to the one on my XF (apart from the mounting holes being threaded or plain on the different alts)

i jst looked it up in the Gregory's book, and yes you are correct
Nominal Output: non-aircond models: 40Amps Aircond models: 50Amps EFI models: 60Amps Dunno where i pulled 80Amps from... My appologies

u-k1(r)14v50a22 - air u-k1(r)14v60a22 - efi These part numbers are usually stamped on the top of the alternator Another way of telling is the width of the stator. Less amps... PS: You probably have an earth problem rather than an alternator problem.. |
