This bloody great lump of cast iron was hanging off the back of the gearbox on my XH. I removed it when we took the gearbox out because it was fouling on the handbrake cable during removal.
What the f**k is it for????

Im guessing the XH has been converted from Auto?

it looks like a rear trans. mount from an auto, but then again you say its fouling the h/brake cable. on the my ed the handbrake cable goes through the gap on this thing

This was my thought...but exactly how the hell does a 2kg lump of cast iron absorb vibrations?? No the ute has not been converted, it left the factory as a manual.

Its to remove/less'n the harmonic vibrations in the driveline.
I read somewhere its at certain frequencies it makes a difference.

its a ute, im sure 20khz isn't going to kill you or your dog. :D
I doubt its going to make a difference, however my car has one, the gearbox out of an XG has one and the T5 in the old mans XF ute has one too! PS: I'm struggling to find the explaination thats on here :/

Funny you should mention "the dog". Whe I enter ute shows in it they actually ask for the name of the ute (yes we name our utes ). Anyway some have names like "Runs Ruff" and things like that...mine is called "The Dog"

Some Jap cars have them mounted on the exhaust pipes under the car. Some Falc wagons have a harmonic balancer type front slip-yoke on the tailshaft. All for NVH reduction.

yep, my tailshaft has one also. rather large one actually substansually bigger than an auto wagon.

I never put it back on. Have had enuf of lying underneath that f**k ute
. Been driving it for a week and a half at all sorts of (read various but not neccasarily illegal  ) speeds and have noticed no extra vibrations or noises. Didn't actually look like it was rubber mounted unless the rubber was extremly thin. It has also got the big dampner on the tailshaft.

i had one of them, i had to take it off coz it kept on snapping my handbrake cables, coz the cable kept rubbing against, it havnt had it on for bout 10months have had no probs without it so far, are they worth anything

i work in a lubrication and condition monitoring team in the mining game and we do vibration analisist on all mining equipment and form trends and harmonic frequencies on all fixed plant equipment and i can tell you that the right harmonic freqency can totally destroy something in a very short time ...wether it be the welding on your chassie or the bearings in your drive line, the engine mounts or the welding on your exhaust or a number of other things the list is endless and the damage over a short period or long can be very expensive and could be that bad it would turn your car into a death trap and a 200 dollar bucket of s**t..... my advice is put it back its there for a bloody good reason.. and it will save you money and worries in the long run and short run to... but thats just my opinion!!! never seen one before but if its for vibration and balancing then put it back you are crazy if you dont....
