Hi guys,
Just purchased an XD Fairmont Ghia as a first car for someone, however there is one thing that is bothering me, the interior lights for the dash. One of the bulbs for the console section (A/C; Fan; Vent etc) has gone, making it extremely hard to see anything, the bulb near the speedo section has also gone...anyway to replace these bulbs yourself?? The one near the speedo (and battery and oil indicators I think) I really need to get done. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thx Dallas |

Thx Dallas The bulbs around the heater controls are a pain in the a***, a fair bit needs to be removed to get to them, if I didn't have such a poor memory I could tell you step by step, I have had a few D's and E's. (I have a feeling, clock, radio cover, heater control knobs, control nuts needs to be removed in this order to get at the bulbs, worse thing is when an aftermarket radio is fitted) The cluster is dead easy compared to some cars except for the lights switches, poor memory again, but I will give it a try, the black cluster cover has to come off first, I think it is two screws just under the top of the cover and then two screws at the bottom of the cover which you need to remove the fuse cover to reach, the light controls can prevent the cover being pushed to the side if there is driving lights, the driving lights switch will at least have to be unplugged (I think the headlight switch can be a bugger at times?) then there is two screws at the top and two at the bottom of the cluster to remove, unplug the wiring, lower bulb holder (twist anti clockwise) and out it comes. The bottom bulb holders I think have removable 5w T10 bulbs (They shine back at the instruments with a green coloured perspex filter except for ESP which uses red) and at the back of the cluster I think has T5 non removable bulbs (twist anti clockwise, pull and out they come, sometimes these are bloody tight and may need pliers), you replace the whole bulb and holder, this would be the time for a LED conversion. I should still know what is in the clusters, I still have heaps of full instrument 6 and 8 clusters stored somewhere, I should clean them and sell them. If anyone spots a mistake or something missed please correct me

If anyone spots a mistake or something missed please correct me Thx Macca, After a bit of tinkering around I managed to replace all the bulbs (although the interior is still very dull when lit). The ones near the heater/aircon/radio controls are loose - apparently the damned globes, when inserted push the back part of the globe holder out and vice versa, so I am going to have to pull it out again for another squizz. I bought the XD as a first car for someone, and own an EL Fairmont Ghia, which is a pain in the butt regarding bulbs etc. Tell me, I have another problem which you or someone else may be able to assist. I have just realized that the trip meter (I think that is what it is called, the section under the odometer) is not moving whatsoever - sits on zero. Do you know what could cause this? (is there a plug at the back of the thing that may not be plugged in???) Thx again! |

Most likely a stripped gear inside the cluster is the reason the trip isn't working.

with ragards to the console section (A/C; Fan; Vent etc) it is a simple change u guys been doin it the hard way. push centre vents so they are pointing down as far as they go and look in the opening where the vent has moved from two screws remove and tilt outer vent panel out from bottom. there globes are in the light dispersers. globes normally coated in green for subtle lighting but can scratch off for brighter effect. these globes are also controlled by the headlight knob twist for dim or bright.
