Years ago a mates father put an XC tank in the rear as he hated the plastic tank. He cut out the XC rear floor pan in the boot and fitted it in the XD. It was never picked on and was adr for safety at the time but not sure now.
The same guy later fitted a 460 into a XD ute with a 4 speed and got busted doing a burn out in second then put it into third and pulled over and got warned not booked.

If i was you i wouldnt just go choping up an XY tank check to see what its worth first if its in good nick or you might end up kicking your self latter specially if its the larger of the 2 tanks that came out in the xy's if its in mint condition i would not go choping it up!!!!!
Get a custom small drop tank made from stainless or get a fuel sell and mount it in your boot Or put dumpers behind the rear wheels or stop them at the diff go speak to an exhaust specialist they will have ideas that could help you out.

why don't you just fit a high flow system that is based on the original XD twin setup?
I'm currently building an XE with the works, blower, efi & over 500cui etc, and I found that only minimal modifications are required to fit a BA XR8/GT twin 2 1/2" aftermarket system. Whatever route you decide to take, be sure to think 'bout it carefully, especially if you are gonna chop chop cos its pretty hard to put the metal back and it took me years to find a shell worth even considering using for a build up, simply due to rust & bodgy mods/repairs. cheers & good luck kenny

ID be going they way of a drop tank they look awsome from the rear on the XD you can get the filler installed exactly where you want it and still keep the original sender unit. Get them to make the boot side shalower and you,ll be able to run that spare tyre and you wont have any hassles with what size tail pipes you want to run either as they,ll allow for these when you order it.

cheers guys all great ideas, but a guy from a steel fab shop reckons about 2g for a custom alloy drop tank built around the spare wheel well, f@#k that. i reaken cutting the floor out and fitting another factory tank is the way. and canstill fit a dummy alloy drop tank(if thats not to wanky) aswell.

ok , ive bought a tank out of a xf ute ($125) which will fit ok, now i have to move the filler
from the side to the rear which looks straight ford(for a welder), the sender is sideways about 10 inches so have to extend the fuel line , breather and sender wires(straight ford). and cut the spare wheel well out and patch the floor (straightford for a welder). Now i have 2 probs first is the mounting holes in the seams are right around the centre of the tank so half the tank will be in the bootand then the spare wheel has to sit on top of that so i lose heaps of boot space. last of all i have to work out how to support the weight of the tank, so if anyone can help or recomend something different that'll be good. p.s the only thing relavent i can find in the adr laws is that any welding has 2 b done buy a pro.

In boot mounted fuel cell would have been your best and safest bet in this situation.
