I have compleatly recharged the battery and it still is making that sound and going slow.
i will pull the starter from the car and check it out Regards Barry

That's not turning too slow, it should start at that speed. I dare say u are missing fuel or spark, like bry said a bit of petrol or start ya bastard down the carby, make sure the coil is good too.

also if you havent put some fresh petrol in it that wont help with getting it started

according to his previous comments he has spark and there is fuel getting in the carby so i think we can cross out spark for now but he did say there was fuel dripping out the carby now i have had no expirience with carby setups as all my cars have been injected but could it be a cloged up carby?

That got it to start now, the fuel that is in it is fresh, i did put some fuel down the carby and the engine started up ok, so the engine must be ok. i did notice a fair puff of black come out of the tail pipe when i started but that seems to have cleared up now. i will move it to where it has to go i also got a new battery for it and the person at ipswich batteries said i need the 550 for the xf so got that for it. save me from having to keep moving the battery from the honda all the time. the horn even works now. Thanks for your help Barry

i have managed to move it, it seemed to choke up when i used the accelerator first few times but seems to have come good.

yeah that sounds about right for a carby car, fuel down its guts and they usually come to life, and they are always the biggest s**t to get to rev or idle if they have been sitting a while, words of the wise start it at least once a week to keep her good,

sounds like everything is fine - after dumping fuel down the carb black smoke is very normal, its running rich as all hell till it uses the excess up

If that battery definitely has a full charge on board it is quite possibly corrosion in the starter motor.
Be careful cranking it for too long as you can overload the battery/starter leads. (have seen them basically melt on a 12 month old Hilux before due to stuffed/corroded starter). If battery confirmed fully charged, I'd be trying a different starter motor!
