Hi guys, hoping to draw some of your tech expertise here as I've quickly run out of options with my battery light issue. I recently bought an XG panelvan (not running) after changing the head and also replacing the coil pack the car is finally running however I can't get the battery light to go off? As I never got to drive the car when I first bought the car I'm not sure if this was an exisiting issue as I've since replaced the speedo to an XG S-Pac speedo (prior to getting the car going) and the light simply keeps coming on. I've changed 2 secondhand alternators from the wreckers and still the light illuminates? I haven't tested the alternator to see if it's charging correctly as I don't have a multimeter but I'm wondering if there could be an issue with the cluster upgrade I did. Any one experienced the same issue? The s-pac cluster came out of an XG so I assume it's a plug and play scenario. The battery gauge hovers at around 10 to 11 volts. My battery seems ok and the cluster illumination doesn't dim as I continue driving at night which would indicate a lack of charge. Any comments appreciated.

Today I got my hands on a multi meter and strangely enough the alternator was charging around the high 13 volts and the battery was low charge. I replaced all fuses and relays and then put a second hand reconditioned Alternator in the XG and sure enough my problems were solved. The car is charging the battery beautifully and the voltage gauge on my S-pac speedo is much higher then where it was sitting yesterday. Thanks for reading as its been an interesting few days with the XG. Next job is wiring up the low water warning lamp. From what I have read I need to ground the black wire and connect the yellow and red wire to the cluster possibly number 3 pin?

You may have had a bad connection somewhere with your alternator fail light... A bad connection causes a voltage drop across it, and you may have been dropping a couple of volts causing the low 10-11V reading... 13.8 to 14odd is normal... The illumination lamp is a filament as opposed to LED so it takes a bit to drive it, and LED would be illuminated all the time... There is voltage on one side from the battery and the alternator (when working) produces that 14odd volts on the wire to the globe, there is then no voltage drop across it causing it go out...

You had 10-11V in the car electronics, the alternator was putting out 14 when you tested it... That 4 odd volts would have glowed the globe...

Yeah that sounds pretty close for the coolant lamp...

Cheers,
Tim
