Hi guys, My mate has an XH 5 speed 4.0L ute and he wants to put an EL Fairmont Ghia Tickford (XR6) engine in it. What parts does he need to do the job? I noticed the running gear in the XH is the same as my EB, so does this mean he'll need the computer, loom, cables and air intake from the EL?
Cheers Jason.

XH run a low manifold so use that original 1 onto the XR6 engine and no need to change computer or loom, far as I know to use the XR manifold will need to do some wiring to fit, think this has been a topic befor

The XH XR6 had the EL BBM (intake), all other models had the ED type intake.
My point is that the parts are available to use the EL BBM, but more work is required.

Yea i know what you mean Madmatt, depends if his ute is and XR or standard longreach.

I used to have an AU XR6 motor in my XH and just used the original XH manifold as I didnt bother trying to fit the XR upper manifold.

So is there any benefit to throwing the xr6 engine in and running the stock running gear?

The block is essentially an EL motor - early XH's have the EF 12 counterweight crank.
All XH's are already EEC V (disregard the aircleaner writing). They do run a 60 pin ECU. Swapping the cam from an ED one to an EF/EL one, installing a BBM will make a noticeable difference - you only need to add one wire from the ECU to control the VSV which in turn operates the BBM runners. From my testing, it seems the XH ECU will operate the runners on start up and < 3800RPM - I didn't get to test the switchover > 3800RPM. You'll also need to change to: -EF/EL induction/air cleaner -EF/EL rocker cover -EF/EL throttle cable + possibly the accelerator pedal

^if the stock ecu in XH's already have the ability to run the BBM with the addition of the wire to control the VSV can the ecu accomodate to run the engine with this or would it need to be tuned?
sorry for the thread hijack

I couldn't tell you for sure - I don't have dyno charts. The XH ECU seemed to run the engine fine in it's post BBM change. Tuning wise, it should have spark maps with a bit more advance due to the log manifold - and a big diff over the EB/ED log engines, is there is a knock sensor to retard timing if there is any pinging.
If you do a BBM change and install an EF/EL cam, it would be easiest to fit an EL ECU - they're cheap, and plug straight in, and theoretically, the tune will be spot on.

Ok we're doing the engine swap this weekend.
We've got: - complete EL XR6 engine - Standard Longreach ute - engine wiring loom from EL - accel. cable etc Anything else we need? The engine came off an auto box and his ute is manual so what do we need to changeover? Obviously we change flywheel over but is there anything else.

you'll need a spigot bearing and new crank bolts if your fussy.

Its an XH1 and the BBM wiring should be with all the other wiring I kept from the EL I wrecked.

Easiest would be to retain the existing wiring and just add for the BBM.
Depends though whether any other mods want to be added - cruise, ABS, Climate control, etc.
