Gday all,

I have just picked up a sweet XK wagon, but its got the original 2-speed auto in it! I was wondering if there was any chance a BW-35 would bolt up to the block or do i need an adaptor bellhousing? Any thoughts?? I would love to convert it to a 3 speed manual on the tree, but i cannot find any spares apart from ebay and they are all in bloody vic!!

Can anyone help?

Cheers

I'm fairly certain that the later transmissions of any sort won't bolt up to a 144/170....the bolt pattern for the bellhousing is too small.

Didnt the later XM/XP's have a 3 speed auto behind the 170? Maybe talk to a few auto shops and see what you can find out.
BTW, that is a neat looking wagon...OZBMX will be very jealous.. :D

Excuse my ignorance, but wouldn't it be worth keeping a vehicle of that vintage as original as possible?

hi just saw this - hope your 3 speed Manual conversion is progressing .

just for your info :
the early (Xk to Xp ) falcons when they have a 3 speed (non synchro first)manual or 2 speed auto box had whats called a 'narrow block' 6 cylinder and matching bellhousing
the Xp onwards BW 35 3 speed auto ( and XR onwards (all synchro)manual) had a wide block belhousing (6 cylinder ) and wide block motor
all refer to the bellhousing bolt up arrangement.

so if you have a 3 speed auto box/ XR onwards 3 speed manual box and an early narrow block -they wont bolt up.

you can also get adapter plates to make the narrow block a wide one for bolt up of 3 speed auto or later wide 3 speed ( all syncro)manual boxes as below

If he is fitting the 3 on the tree manual that is correct for the model that it's much of a muchness.

I've got a 3 on the tree manual in my torana, only gripe i have is if you slip on a quick 1st to 2nd change you can break your knuckles on the windscreen. I also have a bench seat still in it, and i won't change that, so it's staying a column shift.

Xklover -> That's one sweet looking wagon you have there. A nice cruise machine.

Cheers

Hello there

Some machine shops have the adaptor plate to suit the later BW35 to the 'narrower bellhousing bolts.'

I bought one for my XP as i got a hold of the older 170 when i decided to blow up the older engine.

Im down here in Sydney, i got it from Dellow Automotive from old sock that they have.

Might try giving them a call maybe.

Great looking XK there, very nice.
