G'day everyone..

Recently purchased a XT sedan, standard 6cyl, 3speed manual column shift..

What my plans are..

Cut rust out, little bits bubbling behind the rear window, new paint, mild 302 and just get it looking nice.. but in doing this I think i'm gonna be on quite a mission, let alone all the $dollars$ .. I've always wanted one and have finally gotten one! woohoo! lol

Haven't actually picked it up as yet, so i'll grab some pics when I get it and post the slow progress..

From my understanding too fit the windsor i'll have too put a disc brake front end on it? what else? I plan on running a C4 more than likley, not sure what kind of diff.. it wont be pushing massive power so a 9" would probably be too expensive atm? I have no idea..

Are XT's 4stud or 5stud? Any more information on them and i'd bee veeeeeeeeery happy!

Thanks guys

Rob :D

hi, i did the same conversion to my xr around 20 years ago. i fitted xb stubs and vented disc brakes to the front end with xy tie rod ends. you may need a remote booster (vh44) also if its not a fairmont, fairmonts have solid discs too. xr onwards had 5 stud. early style v8 mounts that bolt to the body for the engine from xr-xy. think my tailshaft is from a xd 6cyl. a borg warner 4 pinion v8 or ute diff will hold up for a while with auto if you are not planning on big burnouts from xr to xy. i also modified some xb v8 radiator mount to fit the crossflow xb radiator. some minor wiring changes are also needed. in sa i didnt even need to have an inspection when finished as the xr came out with 289 option, just notified rego and they sent out new papers. was about $40 dearer for v8 reg.

Nice xt there mate.Your best bet is to have the car sand blasted to see whats actually hiding under neath the paint.Or if you got the coin have it acid dipped.

Seeing the rust in the pics i would actually replace the hole sill and the rear beaver panel. That sill looks like its full of rust though. The best thing to do to chedk for rust is to get a screwdriver and jab it along the rusted areas this will determine how bad the rust has taken the metal.

mate nice pick up going to be great project, dont under any circumstance get your car acid dipped this is the old way of removing paint remember this will remove all paint in all areas and actually premote rust in the future as you will never get paint in some of the areas it will strip... for a car of its age its commin for alot more rust than that in more areas as well so ide say its not a bad body, there really is no reason to strip a car back to complete bare metal and i would recomend against it unless of course your going to spend 50 thousand on an award winning car all you need to do is target the sorounding areas of rust and sand the rest of the body back smooth, if you go to bare metal you are opening up a can of worms as you are exposing the metal to air and well thats how it all starts the old saying is true if it aint broke dont fix it... and if you do want to go to bare metal use something that is less intrusive and go with soda blasting.. just my opinion..... What running gear is this street machine going to end up with????

Yeah I wont be stripping it back too bare metal, I just want too build it as a tough streeter that will be driven rain hail or shine, but still look nice.

As for that sill I jabbed a fair way up the sill and it seems to be only that bit, the back of it is fine and so is the front bit.. so I don't think i'll be replacing the whole sill panel.. too much alcohol involved in that .. haha

As for running gear.. I'm not quite sure yet..

I was thinking a 302 windsor with a bigger cam etc but my uncle has a 302 clevo at his house with an FMX backed onto it.. Not quite sure of the differentces between 302 clevo and 302 windsor .. ??

Also do XY/XW louvers fit XR/XTs?

I don't think the body is in too bad of conditoin considering i only paid 2k for the car running

I couldn't get my right glove on properly and had to pull over near the bridge and stuff it in my pocket. Was a dream run down indeed, same can't be said for the ride up.

With regards to the clevo, how different is that engine bay compared to an XW-XE? I was always of the impression it was smaller, and that rear brace seems a little hmm. Hoping some early bird falcon specialist can answer that query. Hey if the engine is free or close to it then she's a goer like that bogan mum up the pass

Mate, if the clevo is cheap enough, use it. Stroker kits are pretty cheap, you could have a 393 cube deal for a fair price.

No, XW/XY has a different back window, look on Ebay for a louvre or venetian to fit the XT.

Good luck. :D
