hi, i have a 1986 ZL fairlane. i need to either fix the head or get a new engine.
i am just wondering what engines will fit in it. it has the 250 at the moment, and i know it didnt come out with a v8, but is there one that will fit?
also, i have heard of EF engine fitting in XF. is my engine bay the same as XF engine bay? and if so, how difficult is it to put EF engine in there?

i have searched the forum and didnt find any info on it, so i am posting a new one. please direct me to the right post if these Q's have already been asked.

errrrrrrrrr,how about you look in the 6 cylinder section. in the stickies at the top. ford 6's and retrofit information (hint hint).

I had a xf ute a few years ago I found a 351 windsor cheaper than a el 6 just moved the mounts 1 inch forward to clear firewall got it rego'd with no problems.

IIRC the carby 6 was 'standard' but most where optioned with the efi.

as long as you use a efi engine from another ZL or XF that is pre 1987 (when they changed to unleaded) you will have no problems in doing the engine transplant.
i think you can put the unleaded head onto a leaded motor... but i am not 100% sure on that one.. i think the computers where slightly different or something?

Outside of fitting another 250, the possibilities are endless mate...easiest is to just get another 250 in good shape and fit that, all XD-E-F engines are relatively the same, yours would no doubt be an EFI, yes?

Fitting a new head aint too much work or $$$

Fitting an EF-L motor is a bit of a task, not a straight swap as many seem to want to believe... lots of changes to be made...

Windsor V8 can also be fitted without too much drama, 302/auto isn`t all that expensive if you keep it mild, heater hoses can be a bit fiddly too...

Both the above will reqiure an engineering certificate if you want them legal...
