i cant help but notice that you know jack s**t about these cars and you phenolic spacer thread is another big wank. it dont matter what you do with your cold air theory but there is always going to be heat around the engine. ford spend millions on r&d and the factory set up is the best for power and economy so the crap you post is a waste or time and money..

Ford have constraints on mass production and costings that we don't have... Thats why car mods are often beneficial. For example why don't any of theaustralian mass produced cars have mandral extractors by default instead of cast headers? because the cast headers are far cheaper to produce and do a "good enough" job.. they can be improved upon though can't they? If fords under bonnet cooling is perfect as is.. why did they put functional vents on the XR6 bonnet instead of just cosmetic ones? We are also talking about E series falcons and there have been advances in under bonnet cooling since they were designed. Are you an engineer? |

I've just read through this page as I ws think about where to get some better airflow to the Acron Plastics airbox I have.
I think everyone should be greatful for your input to this forum with your whacky experiments. It's all the stuff a lot of people would like to do but cant be stuffed to do the repetition that is required for useful results. There are a couple of things I think need to be pointed out in regard to the high and low pressure zones over the bonnet. I wont go into the theory about it, but generally where there is low pressure air, there is high velocity air, and where there is high pressure air, there is low velocity air. If you really feel like researching it, it's the bernoulli principle. If you have a stream of high velocity air and put something in it, the front of that item will now be a high pressure zone. So Fast-XR's bonnet protrusion that got him his fastest qtr, is the perfect option to gather cold air. As the air is low pressure over the bonnet at that location, the protrusion from the bonnet will actually be collecting high velocity air and become a high pressure zone inside the tube. |

Interestingly, you would be correct in most circumstance. However, in this you are slightly wrong. The tests I did on this would actually confirm your viewpoint if the pipe was higher - or slightly further out of the bonnet.
The original Ford shaker intake works where it is because it is slightly higher up the bonnet (towards windscreen) and is a flat raised intake that does collect all that fast moving air you talk of. The FAST-XR example is too close to the front and the pressure wave of air really really really does create a lack of air at that point. Remember I only tested at speeds up to 70km/h and I'd admit that anything over this would result in a possible change in favour of your message. The "bow wave" created by the front of the car is very strong at that point. I'll have to go and do the experiment again, as it was VERY unscientific and I didn't record the results as this experiment was originally to find venting positions. Thanks for the comments. You've given me something to add to the list of things to do!! (Just what I need......! LOL) |

I dont think the front of these cars is not square enough to have the same sort of impact as that of a curtain sided truck, where you see the curtains pulled out, then pushed in just behind the cab as the air 'comes back' to the normal stream. A simple experiment to show there is high velocity air flowing directly over the bonnet is to watch what happens to rain on the bonnet. If there was an area affected by the bow wave, the rain wouldnt be affected as much as it is. |

The rain experiment is a good idea! Would need a backwards facing camera and some good equipment for that little gem.
I tried with a simple boat mast wind speed thingy. You know --- Three cups that spin around a central bearing attached to a readout... Like I said, it was beyond the scope of my original testing and it was, to be honest, a little complicated without making a proper test rig of some sort. Now you've got me going I'll probably be down the local Chinese Two Dollar Shop buying suction cups and rigging something up to the bonnet that can be easily moved throughout... Hmmm, you've got me thinking alright.... Good on ya. Was getting bored of cars... Was seriously running out of things to do with no money! |

Glad I could give you something to spend more time on, and spark you interest again.
I dont think you need to do an experiment though, I can tell you that after driving at 80-100 for 10mins or so the bonnet is basically blown dry. I wish I had the spare time you seem to find. |
