If crap already fell into the oil galleries, I would try and pour some clean oil down the galleries to move some of the possible dirty stuff into the sump, drain the sump and put some clean oil in once everything is complete (no oil filter change), run the car for a couple of hundred kms...or go for a bit of a drive to mix the oil up and then do another oil and filter change. Coolant, I'd say pull the radiator out and give it a flush, as well as the heater core if possible and run some water through the head as well and try to get some dirt out. Put it all back together and fill the coolant system with water and take the car for a drive until the car is at operating temperatures. Then flush the system again and fill it up with radiator coolant and water. Something I would do...of course doing both oil and coolant at the same time. phong =P~

I did it. The engine is up and running. Took a hell of a long time but it's done. Thank god.
Anyway. I have a question. I was told that after running the car for awhile, I should retighten the head bolts again. This doesn't sound right but if anyone knows any better could they please verify. Thanks |

i would leave it. The headbolts are meant to be torqued once i believe

That is correct.

WHS. The head bolts are torque to yield...or something along those lines. Only need to be tightened once. Though you can re-tighten the exhaust and inlet bolts, some might come loose the first time round. phong =P~

heating and cooling of the motor and settling of the new gasket may cause uneven tension on the head bolts. That is the theory anyway. Certainly hasn't caused any problems by doing it, but i have no idea whether it was really necessary.
If others are sayin no then i wouldn't waste time with it when i have to do it again...

is your mechanic an old school mechanic?? your suppose to re torque head bolts by nipping them up so to speak. not un doing them and doing them back up that defeats the purpose of re tensioning them.. but as others have said you dont need to re torque the had bolts on a i6 falcon as they are torque to yield bolts.. now you risk early failure of the head bolts and gasket because you have undone them and done them up again(stretched the bolts). they are only suposed to be torqued once.. |

U dont re-use head bolts!
they are Torque to Yield bolts.......they lose their Yield strength. U have to use new ones each time.

with the head bolts you only torque them up once. but some cheap head gaskets need to be retensioned after a tank of fuel. im my view just spend the extra $$$ an get a monotorque one.
btw my mate changes heads on his i6s an never changes headbolts lol

bump
old thread but figured this would be the best place to get advice :p now ive never ripped the head off a 4l engine before, so i need some advice about how f**k this really is so i pulled the head off to find this because of this now i assume these are supposed to be holes to allow water to pass, how these have been blocked i have no idea! would the cooling system have operated normaly with these blocked up? and the state of my head! (yes the cam is still in in this pic) is any of this abnormal looking to the extent of say buying a new head or getting a new bottom end together?
