There seems to be a lot of interest on how to make one of these, as nobody can find a cheap source elsewhere. I'm reading $1000 in a few docs, and this is just rediculous.
I did it on my EB, and would like to put it on here, but I'd prefer to avoid the usual flaming that is associated with "teaching thieves" etc. It will not be a lesson on how to break into a falcon, and takes more time to do than relearning a barrel the correct way, so It really doesn't warrant flaming anyway. Learning a barrel takes 30 mins, and building this takes approximately an hour, and it can't be taken from car to car and be used to flog them any easier than a barrel from a wrecker can. It involves disassembly of your existing barrel, and a modification to the PCB inside it. The lock will function as normal after reassembly, but the circuit responsible for transmitting the signal will now be external to the barrel, and as such RENDERS THE SMARTLOCK SYSTEM LESS SECURE. Any objections so far??? To be fair to all, an in the interest of not promoting car theft in any way, if there is a single objection in the next week, this will only be available via PM to members with OVER 500 posts. After a week, if there are no objections of course, i'll make up a docco for all to enjoy, as I think most people who take car security at all seriously will invest in a PROPER security system, not rely on a factory system that is identical from model to model, and therefore pointless and easy to circumvent. Lets take car security seriously, and still be able to enjoy our pre-warmed vehicles in the winter

PS. I also welcome moderators to view the docco for its appropriateness before posting it.

hehehe, no worries. I don't have any pics on this computer, but I will wait the said week before sending anything more than a description.
Kinda avoiding the parents house atm, thats where the EB "prototype" is, as well as the original pics are!

edit that: Found 2 pics, not very good quality, but you can see how its done. With the description, the rest will be a breeze for anyone with PCB soldering skills.

I did mine with another smartlock ignition barrel and just wired it up so it' sonly active when teh alarm is disabled.
But an internal mod would be interesting, I stopped only because I gave up trying to pull apart the barrel. The smartlock circuitry is held in pretty darn good.

How much are barrels from Ford or a wrecker?
The plus of modifying the existing curcuitry is that you can get your smartlock light flashing again, and if you hide the PCB sufficiently, your car CAN be as safe as it was before. The external barrel definately sounds easier if it can be switched on and off easy enough without the BEM complaining.

Excellent idea.
EBGizmo wrote: How much are barrels from Ford or a wrecker? Cheapest 2nd hand I'd say - self serve wreckers might be the go. Might be possible to allow your alarm to enable/disable smartlock, along with the alarms security too ?? (wait for the doco on this one . . )
Use the T5's neutral switch as an interlock so you can't remote start in gear in the case of manual trans equipped cars.

Why not just use a smartlock over ride module?
This way the ecu can still be immobilised when need be, mind you it wouldnt matter anyway since the insurance wont cover a vehicle fitted with remote start....... |

Mainly because they cost a fortune I suppose. Kinda puts a kink in the wallet. And for what they do, they're not worth it IMHO.

$150 is hardly a kink in the wallet, not compared to the alternatives... |
