I thought a few of you guys have done this

why wouldn't you just run it off the thermatic switch ? more adjustability and reliability imo.

well for starters this is my second thermatic switch, and the ecu is set to the correct temp

the switch failed or the relay ? i've had problems with relays, what brand was the switch ? this is unusual.

it was a davies craig thermatic switch, the relays are 2x40 amp relays.
so does anyone have info on how to hook up the thermos off the el ecu |

ive got a el ecu in my ed but im still using the davis craig thermal switch and ive been using this same switch for 4 years now and has been removed and fitted to 3 different cars and it still works fine..
anyway i tried hooking my fans up to the el ecu they worked fine on low speed but i had a issue with the fans not coming on to high speed when the temp got high and when the aircon was on.. there was no fault codes from the ecu, i even tried a different ecu. there may have been something i missed but i found the aftermarket switch to be more reliable and did a good job so i left it as it was... as for hooking them up there are a few way you can do it.. the main thing to know is the trigger wires from the ecu are ground(earthed) triggers. |

done it to the nc , when it was running the el ecu, grabbed the relay mount and relays from a wreck including the power wire and fuse, this also included the factory wires to the fans, all you have to do is earth the relay mount and run two wires from the el / factory ecu plug , get a couple of spare plugs while your at the wreck , run these to the relays, done .
use el relays 3 of not the ef 4 relay set (three speed)

Have you got the problem of the fans running when the engine's started (after a brief stop)? I have this problem and was wondering if I need a capacitor or on/off switch to delay them starting. The starter motor struggles a bit with current drop. Does it happen when the ECU is controlling them?

Does it happen when the ECU is controlling them? if you have them hooked up to the ecu the fans will come on for about 1 second as a self test when the ignition is switched on. but with the set up im using (thermal switch with power to aircon pump overiding thermal switch so fans are on full with aircon pump engaged) i do have the fans switch on on cold start. ive traced it to the aircon pump.. for some reason the aircon pump triggers the fans when the engine is cold but stops after first crank.. |

Thanks xfpaul & Troyman. I'll consider hooking them up to an EL ECU as well.
