Took the Mont down to the track and it only managed to pull a 15.2 with a host of probs.
In first gear, the back wheels/diff/gearbox were violently jumping up and down and when i changed into second the clutch slipped for a couple seconds. It happened every run i did. It felt like the T5 was gonna jump out of the centre console it was that bad. Thing is, it doesnt do this AT ALL on the street and the clutch is brand new and you couldnt make it slip on the street if you tried?!! I know the shockies are buggered, could that be part of the problem? There was defintely 14's in this car, just trying to work out why the car went f**k crazy like it was gonna blow up??!! What could be causing this?? |

Axle tramp, alot more traction at strip then on the street.
Yes, f**k shocks won't help.

Heavier duty shocks should fix tramp (and maybe heavier springs). Also if any of the bushes in the rear suspension are cactus this won't help.
As above the reason you get more traction at the strip as against the strip is that the bitumen is purpose laid and also has traction compound all over it from the pro drag racers.

Cause when i had the auto it never done this on the strip either? Auto launches alot smoother then manual. How were you launching? What were your 60's? As the dog said, if rear bushes are F**k it won't help either. Change your launch around it if its that bad, either launch softer, slip the clutch more, or slip the tires more.

What were your 60's? Stalled it up to maybe 1000rpm and let the clutch out slow enough not to spin too much. Anything higher would just spin and shudder even more Reaction - .570 60ft - 2.255 660ft - 9.844 1000ft - 12.809 MPH - 91.54 ET - 15.2 Booked the car into Pedders for a $14 safety check... Yes i know they are rip offs, but as far as im concerned $14 is pretty cheap for someone to get it on a hoist and check a few things and also make sure they check gearbox/engine mounts while theyre there |

What rubber?
Sounds like you need more grip if 1000rpm is all you can launch at. Should be able to get 2.0, 2.1s. Could also be track prep, I dunno what QLD is like but sometimes they don't do a real good job with street meets down here. Heathcote could be a bit friendlier with the VHT.

Already got wide-ish rubber on the back, $200 15" Bridgestones.
Tyre pressures.... well when i had the auto i tried playing with tyre pressures and didnt notice any difference, but maybe a slightly deflated tyre might stop it from bouncing, could try? |

The first time I took my car down the strip it was doing exactly the same as your car did. The next time I went I dropped tyre pressure in the rears by 10psi. Also letting the clutch slip a bit more too. No more bounce, just a squeak and go.

over inflated tyres caused me to have axle tramp... when im at the strip i usually lower the pressure to about 16-18 psi, seams to work well for me...

Yeah i have them at around 34psi.
The track was the stickiest its been since ive been going there, i think some of the trackbite was left over from a big meet couple days before. The last couple times i was having trouble with wheelspin, and now im having trouble with the car jumping everywhere. I would like to try again with the reduced tyre pressure idea, but the shuddering was that violent that i dont wanna do damage, it sounded like someone was smashing the side of the gearbox with a sledge hammer. And the clutch didnt like hooking up either. Is it possible to do damage to the clutch/flywheel if its "forced" to slip? As its nearly new and has never slipped before that. |

Just ride the clutch when you launch, and slip it for a second or so. So that your not copping a heap of wheelspin, your not bogging it down, and you shouldn't cop any axle tramp as you're not dumping the clutch.
Also, you shouldn't really be launching from 1,000rpm, you would launch harder just taking off from a roundabout. Try something like 3,000-4000rpm, and slip the clutch from take off. |

Mate, i had 235/45/17's on my ED, and still got some traction issues but iwas doing 4000rpm launches, try GOOD tyres (not Bridgestones) with some with width (Nankang NS-II are alright, 235 as a minimum) a 3000-3500rpm launch with clutch slip good, wide tyres and you should get a high 14 or low 15, but what mods have you got, and how much power is the car putting out
