I'm in need of some new tyres. I've been doing the call around and getting prices and there's nothing under $250.00 per tyre. Yet, last year I bought some awsome 17" tyres for $200.00. I mean they're the same width, there's less in the sidewall - so how do they justify the extra expense?

Maybe because they need to be much stronger in the sidewall?
You should be able to pick up some 18s for under 200 though, I looked at some for 170, and some better ones at 190, but I think they were on special.

Just spoke to St George tyres in Victoria - they can do some for less than $800.00 including freight - Nankang NS-2 (http://www.nankangtyres.com.au/prodDetail.php?pid=1). Amazing that even after paying $120.00 in freight they're still cheaper than buying locally... Rip off pricks around here.

Call up places telling them you work at some servo that has a garage and want them trade price ;) Around here, that gets you by, no questions asked.

I'll be doing it in a few days. It's not like it leaves them out of pocket - they still make a profit, just not as much.

That high price will bring new entrants (sellers) until the price comes down to equilibrium where supply will meet demand :)

Yeah I work at Repco casually on the weekends, so apparantly the prices they've been quoted me are trade. I made a note of them, as when they come in asking for stuff from now on I'll give them retail price plus 10%.
