Hello all i have a 1992 LTD fairlaine i just brought for $1500 it has a 5ltr v8.
The problem with it is that it only uses 1st and 3rd gears and isnt going into limp mod. Becouse it goes back to 1st when car has stopped and light or give way or whatever. I have been told this is bands but im not sure the oil smells a little but is still red im just wanting to know will new band fix this trany or shall i find a second hand working one as i cant afford to get recon. And if i was to get second hand one can i get a 4 speed 6 cylender one and use the original bellhousing and talque converter.

There is no such thing as a "Fairlane LTD". Its one or the other, so its a "NC fairlane" or a "DC LTD". Anyway, for $1500 bucks, what did you expect? You'd be better off recoing the auto in your car. If the oil isn't burnt, it maybe a solenoid or valvebody problem???
Take it to an auto tranny specialist, they maybe able to help.

It could be a number of things causing the problem. It could simply be a broken servo piston that applies the band (can be fixed with a bit of care without removing the sump) or it is a broken or worn out band. If the oil is red maybe the previous owner had the sump taken off to try to see inside the pan and just decided to fill the car up with oil and sell the car as is. These last 2 you would have to have the transmission removed from the car to fix.
