I've been told by my mechanic that the 1st to 2nd gear shift solenoid needs replacing and the auto a service.
It only shifts hardish sometimes from 1st to 2nd. He said they'll replace the 1st to 2nd gear shift solenoid and service the auto for $300. Is this a reasonable price? Can anyone recommend any auto specialists? Cheers, Simon |

The price quoted is not too bad but how did the mechanic diagnose a single solenoid problem when 2 solenoids actually control the 1 - 2 shift. Maybe try a transmission specialist before you waste your money.

They test drove it...He's been our family mechanic for years and years. I just wanted to see what other people's opioun would be of it. I think they take it to the Auto transmisson place behine them to get it fixed so im not sure anymore lol.... |

Hi ,Dave tranny dude, you may have solved my prob too.
i have a ef xr6 with similar prob, the harsh gear change only occurs when its about to change down to 1st,then when it moves on it does nothing for a second or so then bangs up into 2nd ,because the revs are up. Sorry to hijack your post, but it sounds likesame prob i described in my post ,back on 22nd april,(ef xr auto prob). still havnt solved the prob ,so if the B-1bevel spring does , your a legend! cheers XR Trev. |

I was wondering about the tranny diagnosis. Dont good tranny shops have a Diag tool that tests the Solenoids directly and give a Go/No Go answer?

clubby sounds on the mark.
most mechanics general and specialised should have a scanner (one of the basic tools to have now) which can give you trouble codes. but if its a spring gone no scanner will pick that up, only experience can do that.

if your not 100% sure then u have to check it with a Diagnostic codes reader........find out once and for all.

My EL had the same fault and one fix offered was shim out the S2 or s3 solinoid I tryed it ,no luck.
So I talked to a auto repair shop and he sure knew his stuff on autos. I changed the S5 solinoid myself, easy as( the $500 one not the cheap others of course) Smooth as after that |
