Hey all. sorry if i am asking a dumb question. Whats the level of involvement in replacing a standard EF GLi tailshaft with a two piece tail shaft? and anyone got any ideas on a suitable donor?

Mal Wood do a 2 piece shaft to suit e-series. They're in QLD though and I think around the $1k mark fitted.

cos was lookin at posts on here and saw what happened to um cant remember whos car, maybe stockstandard? Thought i would get in with a solution b4 i have a problem...

try an alloy drive shaft first, and a hoop if your worried.
my stock gli shaft has gone past the 180 mark many times, although i know about datamines accedent, im not sure on the circumstances around it, did someone hit the dyno speed knob ect... |

just put in an ED steel one thats been balanced with a tailshaft loop, good for 6500 RPM

Just go the 3 1/4" alloy. Data mines shaft went cause the speed limiter was disabled and it was a standard 3" steel driveshaft. There is a bit involved converting to a 2 piece shaft in an E series. A centre bearing mount has to be made and fitted along with the diff flange changed to suit a CVJ. Im sure you could put the $1000 somewhere else.

if your running 3.7 onwards diff gears i'd be thinking about it as that tailshaft is going to spin mighty fast at higher speeds

It's going to spin to the same max RPM as the standard shaft, but it will be spinning faster at any given speed.

i thoght it was something to do with the gear box?

Nah the standard steel shaft isnt made for high speeds. They flex in the centre at speeds over 180k,s causing a high imbalance and eventually explode or snap. They snap at what ever point be it the centre of the shaft or the next weakest point the slip flange that could also damage the extension casing on the trans. This is the reason for speed limiters not just for the driveshafts but for the rest of the car as it wasnt designed for racing.

mitch and jools you are both correct. the speed limiter is in place to protect the auto box from frying itself and also to help prevent unwanted tail shaft failure.
it is still highly recommended to fit up a tail shaft loop a few inches behind the front uni joint. imagine the consequences of the front uni letting go at 100k's :S

Thats one thing i forgot to mention, if in the unlucky case a drive shaft does give way be hoping its an alloy as they do alot less damage..
