Yep - that makes sense - in my case I was specifying to the transmission workshop and to the shonky prick that ripped me that I was after 3.45 a*** to replace my 3.08 one in the original diff.

I've spoken to craft diffs in granville, gear sets with part no's 0575 and 0578 the housing are the same the rear pinion bearing is the difference. Diffs with the 0575 gear set will go into diffs with 0578 but 0578 won't go into 0575 diff but as far as the the gears not physically fitting in the housing is not correct.

The diffs are physically the same from the outside on inspection is what it means.
Internally the gear sets the bits that actually do the ratio, if they are numbered with 0575 then you can put them in either a 0575 or a 0578 gearest diff. If you have 0578 gear set then they can ONLY go in a 0578 gear set diff. Bottom line it means pulling the back off the diff reading the gear numbers to know what you can and can't do.

Spot on dellboy999, from what I've been told the rear pinion bearing is a different size it's bigger on the later model diff, I recently brought a 3:23lsd diff out of a fairmont ghia I've pulled the centre out of it it has 0575 on the a*** so I'm going to see if it will fit my ED 3:08 housing, I haven't yet puled the cover off my diff to see what number my gears are. I'm hope cause it's a may 94 model it may have had the later model diff put in.

there is also a third diff. this is the one that takes a 3.07 or 3.46 a***.
they also have 3.7:1 but this will not fit back into the 78 diffs. also if you have a EA with a 2.77:1 you cant change stuff all into that diff. its the 4th type of diff ive come accross. and you cant even take the LSD carrier out of them for use in other ratio diffs as the offset is different. these things are bloody confusing!!!!! |
