2.77 EA diffs are 75 series, so any of the R31 ratios will fit

but not all R31 are 75 series, im fairly sure the 3.7 gears I put in there were 78s

If they were 78's they wouldnt have fit in your 2.77 housing without machining.

thats what I thought , at the time i was surprised..
ill check it again tomorrow..

yep both crowns has 0575 but just had a look at the housing and it has 0578

that is very strange.....if theyre 75s how did they fit in the first place and why dont the 411s fit if they are also 75s?

i think it comes back to that 3.08 housing being the odd one out..

All the housings are marked 578 - even back in the x-series.

When you say you think it was a 78 series R31, was that the gears or the center? The R31 center I picked up at the wreckers last had a 4 pin 78 series center but the gears were still 75 series 575's

im going to have a look at all my housings and gears tomorrow as I cant recall at the moment...

it makes sense that the x-series were marked 0578 because they were known as a 78 series diff....

The markings cast on the housing are totally meaningless. If you try to find this magical late model housing that fits the old gears then your in for a lot of stuffing around.

i think you should be able to shim it then without any maching...

do the gears fit together at all or is it just an alignment issue..

nar theses play in the pinion when u put the yoke on about 7mm play its like there needs to be a shim between the yoke and front bearing caust it wont pull the bearing into place
