It is not quite as simple as just shimming the pinion either. Here is some info that was sent to me a while ago (hope the person doesnt mind me posting it here)

Quote:
Ok Ive got some info for you. As previously stated, the crown wheel and ring gear on my 75 series 3.7:1 gears are approx ¼" smaller than the 78 series gears that are found in E series falcons. I pulled several diffs apart at a wrecker up here and found that no series of skyline or pintara ran the 78 series stuff. I spoke to a couple of reputable diff workshops within an hours drive of where I am, and both of them said the same thing "the differences and how to make them work are trade secrets, however we will install it for you"...

OK so here is what you have to do.

The pinion on both series is indexed to the hemisphere in the same spot, otherwise the mesh would never have been able to work. Due to the smaller pinion dia, the pinion has a tapered shoulder as the pinion forms from the back of the bearing cone, unlike the 78's which seem to come up parallel to the back of the cone. This offset is approx ¼", which I thought was designed in to the gears to make it work. There is the catch however, you still need to move your pinion in a bit further. My pinion took 0.098" and I achieved perfect tooth contact. I need to make some other shims for the side bearings as I have a touch too much backlash, and this has effected tooth contact slightly, making the contact area slightly heel bound, but not by much.

my EL 3.08 diff is a 75 series. i fit 3.9's in it fine.

what was the number on the 3.9s?

did u fit them yourself or take it to a shop...

EF/EL 3.08 diffs do seem to use 0575 gears, but why dont the 4.11s fit it then?

I wouldnt be surprised if the 4.11 pintara gears are different to the 3.7/3.9 R31 skyline gears.

Besides the obvious difference in ratios...

Gearbox, fairly sure it goes speedo sender > ECU > dash.
Best bet is a speedo corrector between the ECU and dash.
