 Post subject: 4 speed auto power/economy switch

I was told by a transmission place that if you keep the power/economy switch in power mode all the time it can damage the transmission and use alot more fuel......Does anyone know if this is true or not?

I don't get how using more fuel damages the transmission.
I've heard that it's good to leave it in power mod under 80km/h because the transmission will hold gears for longer meaning that when it changes gears less strain is put on the driveline...

for once twr84jdlsex I agree with you :P I drive around the city with mine in power all the time for that exact reason, it holds a gear a bit longer and doesn't "lug" the transmission up a hill in to low a gear. Then when I am on the highway I put it into econ.

And no I do not have it in power to drag off at the lights, I drive like an old man and find in econ mode it can't wait to get into 4th even when I am going slow....

Ive heard economy mode will do more damage as he trans spends a lot more time in OD which apparantley puts a bit of wear and tear on there.

well, i can't really sit with mine in power mode - it really mucks up the revs with my stg 2 cam. its sits too high in power mode at certain speeds, so mine sits in economy pretty much 24/7...

I keep mine in economy just because the difference in pwr is amazing. Kinda like a novelty, car goes so much harder with econ off. Keep it for special moments :wink:

Shouldn't really use O/D under 80km/hr. Yes it does put more strain on lockup convertor as the motor will bog down to much, as it's sitting to far under the torque point.

I find that my car is quicker (better going sounding better) in economy quiite weird, my theory is; LPG in my car creates lag at high rpm gear changes (in non-econ mode) it will lag when changing from 1st to 2nd. I find that it won't lag in economy just a smooth shift. :wink:
A quick tune up of the LPG system will fix this and help it lag less.

Something else i thought i may add. The a/f ratio in od vs a/f in 3rd (i have pretty lights to watch this).

3rd gear at 60km/hr the a/f behaves as it should - swinging quickly from rich to lean as EEC attemps to average on stoich.

4th (o/d) at 60km/hr EEC struggles to achieve a decent stoich mix as the engine labours a little at those revs (1400 odd rpm in a V8 auto with 3.23 gears). Characteried by unpredictable swings from rich to lean, spending a lot of time in quite a rich condition.

This is all speculation, as to this data I have found no data regarding this theory nor a tranny dying just because it was in Economy all the time. If it was that bad, Ford wouldn't use it. You are more likely to kill the tranny in many other ways than using the Eco button..

So modify the electrics to enable the torque converter clutch to lock up by a switch when you want it.

I wholeheartedly agree with One Drone here. Someone prove it, not your brothers uncles cousins second father said so.

Besides, even if it is true, wouldn't it be a good thing to kill as many auto's as possible and have a manual bolt in its place? :)

I get better fuel ecconomy with econ off. Its almost worth about an extra 25-50km a tank.

Car is more fun to drive too.

In my AUII forte I6 i do 45km to work and 45km home 6-7days a week. I do 20km on highway and 25km city peak hour driving. I run my car in power and i get 650km per tank of fuel. I also give it some stick at times.

expalin more about this torque converter locker switch!! I have an EB II and would like to know more about this very much.

I also have the oxygen sensor that has three wires (im told there is variations) and have a lean/rich LED indicator from jaycar - anyone hooked one up b4??
