hey guys. i have a AUII XR6 5 speed manual. Ever since i have had the car (since new) i always have had a small prob with the gear box. Not sure weather im just picky with it or expecting to much from it but i find it at times it doesnt select 1st gear very smoothly. What i mean by this is it doesnt go in easily and not always the same sometimes it hard and sometimes it easy. For instance i take off from the lights when i go to put it in 1st after ive been sitting there in neutral its a prick sometimes and to be honest after 4 yrs im sick of it. I have taken it to ford in sth melb when it was new and told me theres nothing wrong with it and thats the way they are and we took it for a test drive etc and they said it was fine (it wasnt that bad that time). Ive also taken it to preston ford and they said its common also and thats the way they are but we can open it have a look and if you have screwed it you will pay for it warranty wont cover etc etc. My mechanic said ford makes s**t gear box's and that it may be normal just wait till it screws up then worry about it. What i want to know is does any1 else have this problem or is it just me expecting to much from a australian built car. Im sick of it i want to sell the car just becuase of this even though i know i will make a loss. Very disapointed with the gear box i must say other then that pretty good car. Like ive said at times its hard to select the gear at times its ok and ye thats about it. Anyone with some info please have your say. I know i sound like a whinge but its anoyying me and im considering selling the car :/ Thats a long post but i think i needed this. lol

I have sometimes had problems with first. My worst gear is 3rd. The synchros are shot. Even with the clutch pedal to the floor for a good couple of seconds I put third in and it crunches about 1 out of every 50 times.

I have been quoted about $900 to get it sorted. So yours should be fairly similar.
Go to a decent transmission place and they'll sort it out.
$900 is not too much to get it sorted and you be happy with your car again.

Maybe your synchros are worn. Get someone to check it out and replace if necessary. Dont go auto. Autos are evil Kw sucking machines that drive you insane.

I cursed my gearbox so much my first time at the drags.
Even though I hadnt done it before my first run would of been my best of the 6 I had done that night if it wasnt for third.

It ended up being 16.1. I got it down to 15.5 in the end, but if third hadnt of crunched and not gone in I reckon my first run would of been a 15.4 or even 15.3. I was out of third gear for a good 2-3 seconds which held me up a lot hence the 16.1. It eventually went in but I was p****d off.

Check the firewall where the clutch cable comes through to see if its not cracked or anything. The past few weeks my car was having trouble selecting first etc and when i took it to a transmission place they noticed the problem straight away, LOL.

This may not be your problem, but you may aswell check it neway... Better yet, insted of taking it to Ford  get your car looked at an actual transmission place and see if they can find the problem. Good luck...

Yeah mine is the same. When it driving it goes in each gear fine (if a little notchy) but when stopped selecting 1st can be a pain. The trick is to adjust your driving style so that you put it in first before you stop when you are slowing down. Then you can pop it in or out of 1st no worries when you are stopped since it is all lined up. Also try pumping the clutch to or roll a little to get the gears moving before engaging 1st.

i've had that happen every now and again.
the trick is to pull the clutch half out, and force the shifter in.
it will slide in, but i think there is a synthetic oil you can run in there, along with some teflon additive.
that is supposed to make it better.

Exact same prob in my Au XR8.
Doesnt bother me though. Just means I have the release the clutch and then do it again. No car is perfect I guess.
