Hello all, i have a bit of a propblem and i was hoping someone on here could help sort me out. I put a 5 speed out of an ea 6cyl into my xf ute. changed extension housing and bell housing. all went in well now my probs.
1. whilst i am reversing the gearbox clunks (i.e. put her in reverse release clutch and clunk, clunk clunk. gets faster and slower as speed does, continues until you select neutral other gear or stop.

2. intermittantly it makes a grinding sound, its a gentle grinding noise (if there is such a thing). if you have heard a brake disc being machined that is it. This is very intermittant i cannot associate it to clutch, particular gear or anything. just starts goes for a while then stops. or it just goes then stops.

I figure with the clunk in reverse theres something up with reverse shaft in the gearbox. the grinding noise im not sure. I converted from auto so i put in a new clutch plate, pressure plate and spigot bearing. i used a secondhand throw out bearing that seemed ok.

any help much appreciated sorry about the essay just trying to be thoroguh and not waste ppls time.
cheer
justin

I would suggest chucking the auto box back in and getting the T5 checked out. Being an EA box, it may have seen much better days.

Maybe a silly question but you put the clutch plate in the right way yeah?

Im 90% sure i put the clutch plate in the right way. I did the conversion on friday nite, woke up about 2am realising i forgot the spigot bearing and redid it all saturday, just to wonder though, if the clutch plate was in the wrong way wouldnt the noise be constant.

Not necessarily, it would be when slipping the clutch but im only guessing as ive never done it so im only guessing on how it would sound. Maybe your getting clutch shudder? my turbo car does it in reverse and makes a bit of a clunky sound when reversing.

It is definitely not clutch shudder, it is a knock, hard to describe but, it only happens in reverse and the faster i reverse, the faster it gets. I am sure there is something wrong with the gearbox and im hoping someone can shed some light on gearbox internals and whether it would be easy to reco the reverse section.

being a paralel spline it will indeed fit both ways if your not paying attention.... will go on backwards or frontwards just as easy as each other.

no.. if you put it round the wrong way the spring assebly fowles on the flywheel bolts. you would not be able to get the pressure plate onto the locating dowels with it round the wrong way..
