I'm wanting to get myself an LSD. Sick of the old single spinner.
I rang up a place here in SA that specialises in Falcon conversions and they quoted me $550 for a 3.45:1 LSD out of an EL Fairmont Ghia which had done 140 000km. The $550 included installation and 3 month warranty. Is this more/less/about what people would expect to pay? I know I could do it cheap if I hunted around and installed it myself but I don't have the time.

That's a pretty good price including installation, good option if you can't do it yourself.

EL centre or complete EL diff including trailing arms?

Are they servicing and tightening up the centre at the same time?

I believe there are differences in the EF/EL diff mounting geometry and the watts linkage position. Seems you'll probably need both the upper and lower trailing arms off the EL included.

Yes there are differences, as follows. The lower trailing arms are all the same length from EBII to EL. The upper standard arms on an EL are 320mm long compared to the standard EBII to EF upper arms which are 340, and the 320mm arms should be mounted in the front holes in the upper bracket. The XR upper arms are 340mm and have a kink in the end that goes on the diff, and should be mounted in the rear holes in the upper bracket. Cheers BenJ

550 is good, especially installed.
I wouldn't be surprised at 550 for just supply. EL diffs have the holes in the upper arm mounts for all models previous, there are 3 holes. Watts linkage is mounted lower on the diff hat to lower the centre of gravity, but I think the watts link arms are the same length? As a side note, ED XR upper arms are the same length as EL.

They're only going to be be replacing the diff itself. It won't be an axle to axle swap.
The bloke I spoke to said they service the diff in as much as replacing oil and seals. The same company does AU engine conversions for $1250 and complete T5 manual conversions for $1250. Both installed. Good prices I reckon. Sean, look in the Trading Post for them. That's where I found them. They've got a reasonably big ad in the Parts section.

Better to get a EL diff diff complete, that way you get the better handling aswell.

Not a bad price at all, as has been said above. i payed more than that for mine for the wagon, but then only 300ish XR wagons were made to steal it from...
